I really want to know why the techbros who think that it’s worthless to try something because a 100% failsafe and bug-free implementation isn’t possible ever do anything

Not to pick on Gargron, but look at how buggy mastodon has been over its lifetime and the failed features he’s tried and look at how he refuses to consider safety features because there’s no way to make it 100% effective in all cases

It’s almost like the impossibility of perfect implementation is an excuse for something else.

@Laurelai isn’t it weird how every time Eugen and others are like “this is fundamentally impossible,” multiple devs chime in with ways to do it?

It’s by design that instance blocks don’t keep blocked instances from seeing you. Blocking users means they don’t see your stuff, but blocking an instance just means their stuff doesn’t get written to your instance database.

If you’re on mastodon.social you should think about whether you want to be on an instance run by a guy who tried to keep his corporate sponsor secret and is determined to add features that make Mastodon more attractive to advertisers like directories and lists of the most popular and “influential” users and topics and balks at adding reliable privacy controls that could actually limit how much data flows to his instance.

I know it’s hard to move accounts - he’s made it that way
