@stuxnetsource he is so touchingly devoted to recreating features a user experience that we all despise

@Laurelai both Geiger's counter and Wilson's cloud chamber work on a very similar principle: deliberately creating an unstable physical system, one that is very far out of equilibrium and therefore subject to instantaneous change in response to a small stimulus

@Laurelai it isn't! I recommend turning to the archives of _Scientific American_; in their glory days, when they ran a column called "The Amateur Scientist", cloud chambers were a popular thing to construct, operating both by Wilson's method (sudden expansion of a chamber) and by the "diffusion" method (using dry ice to maintain the cloud layer.)

@Laurelai the only people to be "discovered" by such a means are the popular ones.

@Laurelai yes, I agree. I will make a loose analogy (that I do not mean to have taken too seriously, although inevitably someone will): we are currently in a state of affairs roughly analogous to various _interregna_ in history, particularly the "Articles of Confederation" era of American history, when the newly autonomous British colonies tried to muddle through governance as a loose collection of states
