I recommend turning to the archives of _Scientific American_; in their glory days, when they ran a column called "The Amateur Scientist", cloud chambers were a popular thing to construct, operating both by Wilson's method (sudden expansion of a chamber) and by the "diffusion" method (using dry ice to maintain the cloud layer.)
