In 1841 Kamehameha lll merged schools and officiallly created the first public school system in Hawai which primarily taught i the Hawaiian language, afthough most Hawaiians were bi- or tr lingual. Hawaii became the first nation to make education required for children between the ages of six and fifteen. Europ & the United States only allowed quality education for the upper classes and aristocracy. Pre-US occupation, Hawaii celebrated the world's highest literacy rate at 98%. US invasion of Hawaii

Prior to the US occupation, Hawaii had the world's highest literacy rate, surpassing the US and Europe. We spoke Hawaiian, English, and instructed in our native tongue. After the US invasion, the language was banned in 1896 in schools and we were made to view it as a 'shameful'.
