When you see the SSSS mark on your ticket, it means you've been randomly selected for an extra security check at the gate.

@JayDLugin Indeed, I booked the ORY -> LAX leg separately so I could do a 1-day layover in Paris.

@codewiz It's the hiss of the TSA snake.

It's not random. It's added if the trip meets certain criteria. A last-minute, one-way ticket purchase will often trigger it, for example. More security theatre.

      1. Secondary Security Screening Selection
Secondary Security Screening Selection or Secondary Security Screening Selectee, known by its initials SSSS, is an airport security measure in the United States which selects passengers for additional inspection. People from certain countries are subject to it by default. The passengers may be known as Selectee, Automatic Selectee or the Selectee list. The number of names on the list fluctuates and is a secret, although the Transportation Security Administration apparently says there are tens of thousands of names on it.The Selectee list has been cited by civil liberties groups to be infringing on privacy rights and potential for racial and ethnic discrimination. Procedure when selected Passengers who have been selected for secondary screening will have the letters SSSS or *S* (all capitals) printed on their boarding passes as a signal for the need for a thorough search at security checkpoints. In the case of Southwest Airlines, secondary screening selectees may have a "checkerboard" pattern printed on their boarding passes....

      1. What to Know If an SSSS Code Shows Up on Your Boarding Pass
        from Ashlea Halpern
The mysterious code means a passenger is flagged for additional—and sometimes invasive—TSA screening.

"The TSA agents were polite and professional, but the delay nearly caused us to miss our flight."

Same experience: after the secondary screening, I was the last passenger boarding the plane, long after the last call.

@ringo @sneak I guess this time my sins were:
      1) flying alone
      2) booking last minute
      3) booking a separate return flight to the US rather than a round-trip

And yes, they said "randomly selected" multiple times.

@codewiz @sneak yep, in short the tsa has their doubts about you.

its never random, and they always say it is.

@Tanuki @aral Doesn't work when online check-in fails for unspecified reasons, forcing you to get a paper ticket at the counter.

@aral @codewiz not sure if you know this tip already but if you get a SSSS you can pocket that boarding pass and pull up the one on your phone. Present that, it won't have the mark.
