    I'm downloading #Manjaro with the #Plasma desktop.

It's one of the few #Linux distros that positions #KDE and #GNOME on the same level, and I want to see how's the out-of-the-box user experience.

Also, I'm curious to see what the Manjaro installer looks like...

I've been using #ArchLinux for years, but I couldn't recommend it to any of my less technical friends. Even with archinstall, it's still not a smooth experience.

      @dropbear42 I don't think I'll migrate to #Manjaro today.

I just wanted to check if it's something I could give to family and friends who'd normally get #Ubuntu.

Yes Ubuntu sucks and Snap is horrible, but it gets enough QA that users without a lot of she'll experience can live with it without going back to Windows.

@codewiz That's interesting. Afaik a user's trajectory from MJ to #archlinux is quite common [including me], but the reverse direction is much less common. Good luck. BTW [heehee], i wonder if you'll notice slower boot times now. For the 3 years i used MJ, its boot times felt "normal" to me, but once i moved to Arch itself 3 years ago, i found much faster boot times. Apparently MJ devs compile/d their kernels with heaps of extra modules than pure Arch [for wider system compatibility i presume]?

@darcmage Indeed, I've been using Fedora on my personal laptop for ~20 years, and I would recommend it to Linux developers who want a reasonably up-to-date distro and don't mind having to go to RpmFusion and Flathub for media codecs, emulators, etc.

@codewiz As a current manjaro user and probably soon-to-be arch user, I think fedora is probably your best bet as an ubuntu replacement for stability and relatively quick updates.

Back in August, I tried #PopOS and I was surprised by the polished UX they have built on top of the declining Ubuntu.

@pseudoramble @darcmage I used to turn off SElinux on the first weird issue, but now it's been enabled for a few years in a row without me having to notice its presence.

Granted, this is just a laptop, not a multiuser server with email delivery, LDAP and all sorts of daemons...

@dropbear42 I agree, and it's exactly what was needed to get a good number of Windoze users to switch to Linux!

If they didn't make a series of mistakes with Unity, MIR and Snap, they'd still be a good default choice for small companies and home users...

The #Manjaro live image booted quickly and effortlessly in UEFI mode, bringing me to a plain #KDE #Plasma desktop (which is good).

The kernel in the live image is 5.15.60 (an LTS kernel), and KDE is 5.24.6, which is quite outdated.

As expected, WiFi, GPU and sound work perfectly out of the box. If this isn't your usual experience, learn to pick your hardware more wisely, or stop using outdated distros.

      I'm equally mystified, @dropbear42 !

I chrooted into the root partition and found that linux 6.1.arch1-1 was installed, but it only owns files under /usr/lib/modules.

      So I re-ran `pacman -S linux`, which re-created vmlinuz and initramfs in /boot.

Not sure where these scripts are. They don't seem to be part of the linux package.

@neffscape That's right, it's quite buggy and they're aware of it. In Nate Graham's own words:

"KDE software has historically been accused of being resource-intensive, ugly, and buggy. Over the years weโ€™ve largely resolved the first two, but the issue of bugginess persists."

@codewiz let us know how it goes. I'm using #manjaro #gnome on my laptop, but I used #KDE #Plasma in the past. I always found it great out of the box and buggy when changing something from the defaults. I always wondered if it was because of the underlying distro (I was using PopOS that never officially supported Plasma) or because of Plasma itself.
