@jf@codewiz@globalc Ofc i know of the extensions, but i also know, as does any other gnome user or temporary visitor, that inevitably extensions break with new gnome releases, & in some cases stay broken for monthS... some never recover, ie, their Devs walk away in disgust or despair [no doubt visualising Sisyphus].
@codewiz@globalc I acknowledge & respect that many peeps like gnome, but for me anyway, i just cannot take seriously any DE which:
1. offers a default file manager aimed at kindergarten children who've not yet mastered their fine motor coordination, thus need ginormous amateur-hour file & folder iconography. If i put out crap like that, i'd be plain embarrassed.
2. actively stops me using my MANY apps built on SystemTray capability for core functionality. What fools.
2. "Plasma is nice" --> yep, prolly why i've been a KDE4 to Plasma5 user since early 2014.
3. You'll never catch me offering unsolicited praise to GNOME 😜 I require my DE to be adaptable to me, not vice versa. In fact, the day a post appears under my name, fangirling G, will be the day that the space-lizards finally captured me & substituted an evil replicant 😱
You're the second poster today to say this [https://fosstodon.org/@dropbear42/109839149993812610], & i am confused. My F Branched VM has been on 38 for WEEKS now already. On the basis of the linked thread, i thought it implied 39, so have just finished the updates... but it's still "only" 38... ofc, now much newer than b4, but still "just" 38. Why do you & @mirek seem to think this Branched 38 is "new"? I must be misunderstanding, i think.
@codewiz Yes they look nice, & are functional. Sadly though, for me, they're unreliable over the longer term.
Thrice in the past 12-18 mths, i created multiple widgets like yours. It took hours each time [complexity of discerning which fan speed & ssd/cpu sensors were the right ones.] Each time, at the end, they looked fabulous, & i was very chuffed...
...until Plasma ate them. One "trick" of P was that post-reboot, it forgot ALL my widget customisations & reset them to default.
That happened twice. The most recent fsckup was that after an ostensibly routine morning Resume of my Wayland session from Suspend, W crashed, & after login, had lost 1 of my 2 Activities, & ALL my widgets.
I'll never trust them again. I reverted to my battle-hardened many-years-old five desktop Conkies, which are reliable AND give me more info anyway. Also, unlike the widgets, they are easily backed-up & copied to other pooters.
@codewiz Pretty weird! I can't recall that happening to me before, otoh maybe your little "turbulence" here is a warning to me that i've also a little "surprise" heading my way next update? I have both Zen & LTS installed [several months ago i removed vanilla Linux]. 🤷♀️
PS: We need to urgently destroy these posts before the !=arch peeps leap on us & recommend buntu/fedora/suse/void/logtables&pencil
@codewiz That's interesting. Afaik a user's trajectory from MJ to #archlinux is quite common [including me], but the reverse direction is much less common. Good luck. BTW [heehee], i wonder if you'll notice slower boot times now. For the 3 years i used MJ, its boot times felt "normal" to me, but once i moved to Arch itself 3 years ago, i found much faster boot times. Apparently MJ devs compile/d their kernels with heaps of extra modules than pure Arch [for wider system compatibility i presume]?
