Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 23-Dec-2022 22:02:42 UTC Bernie It's really really long... will it fit on my case?
-
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 23-Dec-2022 22:18:06 UTC Bernie To avoid ripping off the PCI-E slot, this big-ass card comes with a so-called "Z support bar", which hooks up to *four* slots on the back of the case 🙄

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 23-Dec-2022 22:27:29 UTC Bernie I used to think my old Radeon RX Vega 64 was ridiculously big, lol...

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 23-Dec-2022 22:29:20 UTC Bernie @keadamander Intel of you want simple, cheap and low power. AMD if you're willing to spend $900 on a GPU, and possibly also upgrade the PSU and the case...

keadamander :commodore: (keadamander@fosstodon.org)'s status on Friday, 23-Dec-2022 22:29:21 UTC keadamander :commodore: Nice one. Still have a RTX2060S in my system from october. Looking for an AMD or Intel ... not sure which one to choose.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Saturday, 24-Dec-2022 06:05:33 UTC Bernie @hayden Back in the say, I had a separate case for my SCSI peripherals! I had 3 hard drives, plus CD-ROM, CD-RW and tape drive.
A total of 6 devices on a long internal ribbon cable + external SCSI cable going to the back of my Amiga 4000.
-
hayden (hayden@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Saturday, 24-Dec-2022 06:05:34 UTC hayden @codewiz at this point I wonder if it wouldn't be better to just have a separate case for it...

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Saturday, 24-Dec-2022 06:16:03 UTC Bernie @the_white_wolf Yeah, I heard that the RTX 4090 is a monstrous card 😂
This one has only 2 8-pin power connectors and a TDP of "only" 300 watts.
-
the_white_wolf (the_white_wolf@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Saturday, 24-Dec-2022 06:16:04 UTC the_white_wolf I guess my baby (RTX 4090) is a little bit bigger😁
I wish you many fun with your new card🙂 -
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Saturday, 24-Dec-2022 06:21:33 UTC Bernie @1lyaP But I didn't quite get your comment with "Hot?"...
Maybe...

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 00:44:20 UTC Bernie @1lyaP AH! Sorry for the misunderstanding, I guess we're both non-native English speaker!
I still don't know: I installed it yesterday, but I've been dealing with kernel / mesa / firmware issues and couldn't find the time to run benchmarks.
It's barely warm when operating in dumb framebuffer mode 🙂

1lyaP (1lyap@lor.sh)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 00:44:21 UTC 1lyaP @codewiz Nooo. It's a videoadapter, right? I'm asking if it is hot. About heating. Temperature 🙃

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 01:20:19 UTC Bernie @1lyaP Good for the winter!

1lyaP (1lyap@lor.sh)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 01:20:20 UTC 1lyaP @codewiz Ah, got it. I've got Nvidia gpu, it goes up to 70 degrees with window opened. So I'm looking at new Radeons now, thinking, checking my bank account 😆

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 22:21:08 UTC Bernie @1lyaP I hooked up the RX 7900 XT and stressed it a little bit. Yes, it runs hot!
I'm mostly concerned that it blows hot air onto the CPU... I heard that the latest Nvidia RTX cards do the same.
How can this possibly be a good design?!?
-
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 22:24:28 UTC Bernie Ok, I hooked up the new RX 7900 XT and...
...it didn't work out of the box on #ArchLinux :crywink:
I mean, the desktop renders, but it's using llvmpipe (software) compositing. Happens with both #Wayland and X11, both #KDE and #Sway.
Why? I couldn't figure from dmesg nor the journal...
-
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 22:41:58 UTC Bernie Ok, I booted a #Fedora #Rawhide live image, which has a pre-release kernel 6.2, and amdgpu acceleration works just fine out of the box.
Take that, #ArchLinux! :fedora:
-
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 22:47:26 UTC Bernie No problem, I'll just get the linux-git package from #aur...
Wait, what? 5.10rc2?!? Why is it so outdated?
That's so disappointing, #ArchLinux! Gotta catch up with #Fedora! :fedora:
-
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 25-Dec-2022 22:50:58 UTC Bernie Ok, but #archlinux's #aur is large and contains multitudes...
I'll turn to linux-drm-next-git, which was updated 2 days ago:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-drm-next-git -
Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 26-Dec-2022 00:31:58 UTC Bernie @tiziodcaio Then why do they have a misleading version number like 5.10rc2? Why not "latest" or "head"?

Daniele Basso (tiziodcaio@mastodon.uno)'s status on Monday, 26-Dec-2022 00:31:59 UTC Daniele Basso @codewiz it's not a problem... The -git packages should not be updated by the version, but if you install it should automatically get the latest one

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 26-Dec-2022 00:33:47 UTC Bernie @penguin42 The dmesg output for amdgpu looks all fine... I saw a couple of errors from the drm ring buffer, but I think I've seen them previously and they're harmless.
I'm not trying mesa-git, but @PeterCxy made me realize that I actually need to build mesa (either version) against llvm-15.

Brett Flippin (bflipp@vmst.io)'s status on Monday, 26-Dec-2022 02:54:58 UTC Brett Flippin @codewiz @1lyaP It’s not a good design. None of the new cards are. I wouldn’t run any of them in a case not the Fractal Design Torrent with bottom mounted fans blowing directly into the GPU. The power consumption alone for 40 series and 7000 series cards is a non-starter if you live in a warm climate.
