     To avoid ripping off the PCI-E slot, this big-ass card comes with a so-called "Z support bar", which hooks up to *four* slots on the back of the case 🙄

     @hayden Back in the say, I had a separate case for my SCSI peripherals! I had 3 hard drives, plus CD-ROM, CD-RW and tape drive.

     A total of 6 devices on a long internal ribbon cable + external SCSI cable going to the back of my Amiga 4000.

     This one has only 2 8-pin power connectors and a TDP of "only" 300 watts.

     @1lyaP AH! Sorry for the misunderstanding, I guess we're both non-native English speaker!

     I still don't know: I installed it yesterday, but I've been dealing with kernel / mesa / firmware issues and couldn't find the time to run benchmarks.

     It's barely warm when operating in dumb framebuffer mode 🙂

     @codewiz Ah, got it. I've got Nvidia gpu, it goes up to 70 degrees with window opened. So I'm looking at new Radeons now, thinking, checking my bank account 😆

     @1lyaP I hooked up the RX 7900 XT and stressed it a little bit. Yes, it runs hot!

     I'm mostly concerned that it blows hot air onto the CPU... I heard that the latest Nvidia RTX cards do the same.

     How can this possibly be a good design?!?

     Ok, I hooked up the new RX 7900 XT and...

     ...it didn't work out of the box on #ArchLinux :crywink:

     I mean, the desktop renders, but it's using llvmpipe (software) compositing. Happens with both #Wayland and X11, both #KDE and #Sway.

     Why? I couldn't figure from dmesg nor the journal...

     Ok, I booted a #Fedora #Rawhide live image, which has a pre-release kernel 6.2, and amdgpu acceleration works just fine out of the box.

     @codewiz it's not a problem... The -git packages should not be updated by the version, but if you install it should automatically get the latest one

     @penguin42 The dmesg output for amdgpu looks all fine... I saw a couple of errors from the drm ring buffer, but I think I've seen them previously and they're harmless.

     I'm not trying mesa-git, but @PeterCxy made me realize that I actually need to build mesa (either version) against llvm-15.

     @codewiz @1lyaP It’s not a good design. None of the new cards are. I wouldn’t run any of them in a case not the Fractal Design Torrent with bottom mounted fans blowing directly into the GPU. The power consumption alone for 40 series and 7000 series cards is a non-starter if you live in a warm climate.
