The most played song on Spotify is probably one of the worst Rod Stewart covers I've ever heard 😆

At 3.3 billion streams I assume people are seriously into it.

Right there at #1, at least for me? The Weeknd - Blinding Lights.
I swear this uses a sample of Rod Stewart's Young Turks.

@fribbledom ah. I haven't even listened to it enough to pick up on sampling. And Young Turks probably wasn't ever one of my favorite Rod Stewart songs, but there's a difference between a "sampling" and a "cover."
Do you recognize Ava Max's "Kings and Queens"? (I FINALLY figured that one out, and it's not what comes up if you Google it.)

No, of course it isn't, and I'm not even entirely serious. But #1 most played song on Spotify? Come on 🤣

@fribbledom, I wouldn’t say sampling is the same as making a cover. Speaking of the Weeknd, his recent hit is actually a cover of a track sampling a classic which in turn sampled multiple other songs.
Hip hop’s made heavy use of sampling since its very start and thanks to its mainstream popularity and classic precedents, such form of derivation can still survive in this age of corrupted copyright. On the other hand, we have to endure monstrosities like software patents.
