      @thunderbird @mozilla so when will #ThunderbirdMobile also have #OpenPGP / #PGP/MIME - Support natively built-in?

      @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla Doesn't K-9 Mail already have PGP support? The GPG key can be managed by OpenKeychain, which works great.

      @codewiz @thunderbird @mozilla that's not what I consider support the same way as #Thunderbird has today...

      Shure there was a time where one needed #Enigmail & #GnuPG installed seperately, but nowadays that's not needed either...

      @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla While integrating Engimail simplified setup for all users, storing separate copies of PGP keys in Thunderbird's own keystore is a UX regression for many users.

      What if all apps started doing this? Modern desktops come with a service for passwords and key storage that app developers are supposed to use instead of inventing their own custom thing.

      @codewiz @thunderbird @mozilla well, I think it's not a regression but quality-of-life change necessistated by using Mozilla's NSS libraries instead of GnuPG.

      Also GnuPG has a shitton of UX issues as it doesn't allows to be used like any other CLI tool can.
      One can't simply do:
      gpg --encrypt ./unencrxpted.file ./public.key
      or
      gpg --decrypt ./encrypted.file ./private.key

      and that alome pisses me off!

      Whereas it makes sense for #Thunderbird to maintain the keys and transparently do encryption.

      @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla All true, but wasn't gpgme supposed to provide the machine interface for apps like #Thunderbird?

      Honestly, I don't know exactly what I was arguing for. I guess I don't care if the backend is NSS or GNU code, as long as it finds my existing keys and trust DB without having to manually export / import / sync.

      @codewiz @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla is your interest primarily about secret keys or correpondent's public keys? Or both?

      @codewiz @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla I'd like to hear Bernie's answer. For secret keys there is a workaround in the existing stable releases (via external gnupg config). For public keys there will be a workaround in 115 that can read pulic keys via GPGME. Unfortunately it was reported as being slow. Reason might be with the reporter's smartcard setup, or with GnuPG's trust db checks, or something else, currently uncertain.

      @kaiengert @kkarhan @thunderbird @mozilla Oh, I didn't realize my usecase was already supported by #Thunderbird.

      I'm mainly interested in managing private keys via gpg-agent even if I'm not using a hardware store at the moment. I would expect desktop apps like Thunderbird to find it via org.freedesktop.Secret.Service, but I can live with some manual configuration.

      I'll relay this information to a friend who's been reluctant to upgrade Thunderbird for this same reason. Thank you!

      @codewiz @kaiengert @thunderbird @mozilla well, on #Unix-esque Systems like #Linux, #Thunderbird does natively do so since the days of #Enigmail as extension...
