Last time I was in Japan, my friend Yoko bought a Rikuro cheesecake with raisins.

Yoko's husband Yutaka doesn't eat raisins, but the box has specific instructions for him:

    5番はりくろーおじさんマークがそのまま残り、かつレーズンが入っていないチーズケーキ

Number 5 is a cheesecake with the Rikuro Uncle mark left intact, and without raisins. 😲

This refers to the center piece of the cake if you cut it in 9 pieces as shown in the diagram on the box.

And, sure enough, there were no raisins on piece number 5! 🤩

The Rikuro-ojisan mark was also there, just not as clearly visible as in this stock photo.

I asked Bard to look at my picture and explain the instructions step by step.

Not bad, Bard! Are you already on Gemini Pro?

@penguin42 Well... actually, the #Japanese word for cheese is チーズ (chīzu) and cake is ケーキ (kēkii) 😄

@codewiz Now I'd love the history of how they got that phonetic of cheesecake rather than whatever the Japanese is for cheese and cake.

@penguin42 There's also 乾酪 (kanraku) which means cheese, but I never heard anyone use this word!

@penguin42 @kevin There's a native word for milk, 牛乳 (gyuu-nyuu). The first character means cow, the second one means milk or breasts. I think it's more specific than ミルク (miruku), and both are commonly used.

There is also a native #Japanese word for cheese: 乾酪 (kanraku) = dried dairy, but I've never seen it in real life.

@kevin @codewiz Of course, but the interesting thing is why they needed/use them; it looks like they didn't have dairy cows until relatively recently (1750s ish?) - but might have had some cheese long ago ( https://gochisohistory.com/cheese-dairy-in-japan/ ). Did they not have anything cake like until they got to borrow the word from English?

@penguin42 @codewiz They are just loan words for imported foods, music/fiction genres, sports, etc. English has plenty of them too!
