On this particularly nice Sunday evening, Via Calzaiuoli (shoemaker's street) is super crowded. These people are not necessarily shopping or going anywhere: they're simply walking around the streets, just like us.

We arrive in Piazza della Repubblica, with its fake historic carousel, which was added no more than 20 years ago.

Paszkowski is a busy "caffè pasticceria". A delicious espresso costs only €1.30 at the bar... or €4.50 at a table on the front patio.

This is a high-volume espresso outlet, with 4 baristas keeping the machine constantly pouring coffee. If you manage to elbow your way to the bar front, they'll serve you within a few seconds. ☕

I'm not sure why Carnevale happens on a different day every year, but some local sources claim it was this weekend:

There were relatively few people dressed up in the streets, probably because the tradition is starting to fade. Kids today are more globalized: they celebrate Halloween and dress up as Harry Potter 😂

@codewiz Saw Venice too on the news today. It‘s related to Easter, which depends on moon cycles iirc. But this year’s Shrove Tuesday is officially February 13th, so idk why are they already celebrating... 🤷♂️

@slyborg This particular basilica lacks its main façade. Michelangelo designed it and made a wooden scale model for it, but it was never built.

        Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence
The Basilica di San Lorenzo (Basilica of St. Lawrence) is one of the largest churches of Florence, Italy, situated at the centre of the main market district of the city, and it is the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family from Cosimo il Vecchio to Cosimo III. It is one of several churches that claim to be the oldest in Florence, having been consecrated in 393 AD, at which time it stood outside the city walls. For three hundred years it was the city's cathedral, before the official seat of the bishop was transferred to Santa Reparata. San Lorenzo was the parish church of the Medici family. In 1419, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici offered to finance a new church to replace an eleventh-century Romanesque rebuilding. Filippo Brunelleschi, the leading Renaissance architect of the first half of the fifteenth century, was commissioned to design it, but the building, with alterations, was not completed until after his death. The church is part of a larger monastic complex that contains other important architectural and artistic works: the Old Sacristy ("Sagresta Vecchia") by Brunelleschi and having interior decoration and sculpture by Donatello; the Laurentian...
