@ayy @ajr my phone and laptop do not have cameras.  tape suffices nicely if you're got one, though.  microphones you can disable at the driver level when not in use, which should discourage all but a motivated/targetted attack.

the easiest way to avoid pain is to use a reliable old PC you keep your personal/private data on that isn't connected to the net, and approach your devices that are connected to the net with the assumption that nothing you do is necessarily private nor secure anyway.  it's not perfect, it's a little clunky, but it is simple.
