thinking about it the "people use discord because it gives them a sense of power" hypothesis seems pretty sound
would just like to add that it also shows you logs when you return, unlike irc
-
@moonman that too
-
@hfaust one of my circle friends is annoyed that i won't go on discord because they do all their event production coordination there (;´Д`)
-
a friend once made an irc bot that mainly dms you the last n messages on the channel when you joined
the problem has always been there
-
@lanodan clearly i picked the wrong server last decade
-
@hfaust well sometimes you need to workshop something in quick succesion and messaging is the only viable way
i told them i set up a xmpp but they were like "i'll still have to crosspost to you from discord anyway, might as well stick to (existing proprietary messaging we already use"
-
@shpuld that one period my friends actually used irc i just set the channel to autoop everyone
it turned out fine
-
@shpuld @hfaust such a tough place.
-
@shpuld @hfaust such is the network effect..
-
@hfaust @hakui there's also the problem that most people don't see it as a freedom issue at all, the fact that they store your shit on their servers somewhere with a shady ToS doesn't prevent you from saying what you want and connecting with your friends. it's like regular people would still use the phone even if they're aware that the government regularly taps on them.
there aren't any really that comparable right now, matrix is the closest I think, and we already have talked enough about matrix's problems...

@shpuld @hfaust once again, uncle ted was right about reform v. revolution
-
@shpuld @hfaust my long term goal is only to have the Adobe be the nonfree service i'm chained to
-
@shpuld @hfaust if we're including improbable goals as well i wish to disconnect completely and move to a nice inaka
-
@shpuld @hfaust i'm already on a flip phone but it's also a sumaho? an unholy combination
