   It took 3 years of dealing with 74xx logic ICs to learn that they are open collector output ICs and 1 extra month to learn that they need pull up resistors to function reliably. I probably learnt this in theory during my undergraduate leve (don't recollect), but without dealing in hardware, I would have forgotten this as it would not have made any sense without actually experiencing this in hardware.

     Without using a pull up resistor in the output, the ICs were behaving erratically and I was scratching my head on wtf was going one. One moment it was doing well and another moment it was all noise in the outputs.
