Santee Dam no trespassing. I cycled this dam twice before being caught by a Santee Cooper guard. I wish they would allow foot traffic. This route saves many miles when traveling between Cross SC and Manning SC.

@randynose I was stopped by a Santee Cooper employee and told to turn around. I begged and pleaded for him to let me slide fearing that I may not have the fitness to tackle a 150 mile ride. 150 is a guesstimate of how long the ride would have been with a turn-around. After a few minutes of discussion he talked with the Santee Cooper security guard. She agreed to let me pass. She asked for my drivers license, filled out a form, and radio called her supervisor. They agreed to let me off with a warning. The guard mentioned terrorism as a reason the dam is closed to the public. A terrorist isn’t going to be deterred by a no trespassing sign. But whatever. Lesson learned. That was my last trip across the Lake Marion dam.
I think it used to be open to foot traffic prior to 9/11 but I don't know that for sure. There are walls so you can't fall in the lake or river. You could run into obstructions if you weren't paying attention. Maybe it is a liability risk. :shrug_shoulder:

@dokuja Not the feds, the state. Santee Cooper is South Carolina's state-owned electric and water utility. Terrorism was mentioned by the guard. It is a shame. What dam was closed near you?
