    @jwildeboer And I’m saying this having worked on projects on both sides—upstream and downstream. Working with the upstream, contributing directly means you actually get a lot of pull within the project, while also ensuring your needs are considered in future development.

      We have seen companies forking open source projects and add features that didn’t go upstream. And how they learned the hard way that this approach means they now “own” their fork and have to support it.

      @cassidyjames the big lesson, that is often counterintuitive to hierarchical companies, is that giving up ownership and control in exchange for participation delivers better results, lower cost and more happy people. Weird ;)
