A #SmartHome should be able to operate completely independent of any internet connection. Everything that needs some sort of cloud connection to function *WILL* end up being switched to a subscription model. And that means you have effectively been un-owned of those devices. So I made sure that (almost) all of my "smart" devices work without an internet connection by putting them on a VLAN with no default gateway. Devices that don't work without an internet connection are a risk, IMHO. #LifeHack
In the olden days, a FOSS (Free/Open Source Software) project typically had:
- A source code repository - A web page with the documentation and links to downloads - At least one mailing list called announce, typically also one for users and one for contributors, all with public archives - An IRC channel to chat with other users and maybe also the developers
Maybe it’s time to try that simple approach again? Everything open, everything accessible? 1/4
What happens when every time your browser sends data to a tracker it makes a beep sound? Well, @bert_hubert did just that. And it sounds like you are listening to an old school modem. Creepy stuff! https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/tracker-beeper/
Niklaus Wirth, the creator of PASCAL and many more things, has left us at age 89. Thank you for all you have done to make programming computers and understanding the importance of algorithms accessible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niklaus_Wirth
“In 1995, he popularized the adage now named Wirth's law, which states that software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware becomes faster.” Hello Blockchain and “AI” ;)
It's only an #OpenStandard if you can choose between at least two #OpenSource implementations of which one is not produced by a member of the SSO (Standard Setting Organisation). And yes, it is OK if more implementations exist that can even be proprietary, as long as interoperability is a given.
Thank you for posting a positive toot to Mastodon. In the next 2 minutes a German person will post a sarcastic and/or negative comment to destroy the good mood you tried to create. We apologise, but is The Law.
#UnpopularOpinion Running your own #Mastodon instance really isn’t that big a thing. If you can work with WordPress — you’re set, IMHO. Book your instance as a service, so you don’t have to care about the complicated parts. I am a happy and proud customer of @mastohost. Do it for yourself and, say, max 5 friends or family members. I guess I or @aral should write a blog entry on how we work with our small instances to show you it’s really not magic.
When #META invites you to secretive talks about the #fediverse and you are told to not share anything about those talks, be it by spoken agreement or an NDA — remember admiral Ackbar. It's a trap.
@kielkontrovers I said I don't use spam filters like SpamAssassin etc as the DKIM/DMARC/SPF and fail2ban setup already makes sure that most spam doesn't even make it to the mail queue :)
