What would be a decent PC speaker system nowadays?
I'd want something in the $50-$200 range, possibly with subwoofer and stereo midrange speakers.

@xerz I'm almost sure my ASUS ROG mobo had 5 audio jacks + digital output... in addition to the HDMI outputs which can also route digital audio.
@codewiz (It’s interesting, I don’t have multichannel or digital audio outputs per se. “Just” DisplayPort, HDMI and a regular jack on my box. How’s hi-fi handled these days?)
@codewiz I thought people used headphones huh :blobcatthink:
@codewiz …wait, actually, I DO have more jacks and digital. Wow I’m dumb :blobcatderpy:
@xerz :patcat:
@codewiz Studio monitors.
@kai Wait, is that a single unit? Do I have to buy 2 of them? And then I'd have two independent volume knobs?
I think I'll need something more PC-friendly...
@codewiz if you want to indulge a little https://jblpro.com/products/305p-mkii
@kai You audiophiles make everything so difficult! 🤕
I just wanted to hear... you know... the sound.
@codewiz spend a little more, get a lot more 😉
At least they have their own built-in amplifiers!
As for volume control, I use the one on my interface. It modulates both channels simultaneously. This is typical.
@kai @tagomago What about this 2.1 speaker system? "THX certified" and stuff.
https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-USA-M3600D-Multimedia-Speaker/dp/B07BLZVT6D/
@codewiz sound is half of the experience! match your graphics budget. 😉
@kai @tagomago Isn't it weird that one speaker has a single RCA connector, while the other one has what looks like an old VGA connector?
If the amplifier is inside the subwoofer, how do they drive both the midrange speaker and the tweeter in the L satellite with just 2 wires? 🤔
@kai Ok, I like the idea of being able to switch between two sources from the controller...
The extra cables running around the desk will offend my zen sensibility, but once I have a drum kit in the room, there's no going back.
While I'm at it, should I get one of those USB audio switches that we discussed a while ago?
@codewiz the low frequency effects channel is more for movies than music (snob warning)
The 5" JBLs go down to 49Hz and resonate down to 43Hz with the port. I'd be surprised if this wasn't enough to please you.
You could get something like this https://www.amazon.com/Mackie-Controller-2x2-KNOB-Passive/dp/B01NCUZ32O/ref=asc_df_B01NCUZ32O run the line out from your sound card to the line in on the big knob, then get a pair of 1/4" TRS cables from the big knob to the JBLs.
You are spending twice as much but it's going to sound 10x better.
@xerz That meant: "you're not dumb... just a bit Gen Z, if you never used those audio connectors in the back of your PC"
@codewiz …thanks I guess????????? :blobcatblush:
@kai I like those TAPE IN / TAPE OUT labels 😁
@codewiz I don't remember anything about usb audio switches 😅
Instead of the big knob you might consider a plain old analog mixer for more connectivity and routing options https://www.amazon.com/Mackie-402VLZ4-4-channel-Compact-Quality/dp/B00EDRUQXC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa
Or look on craigslist. The best part about analog hardware is that an investment can last for decades.
I have two 5″ self-amplified KRKs and am very pleased, but I believe anything in this range will suit you perfectly for many, many years.
@kai @codewiz Sure! Also others will point to some Yamaha, maybe. I mean, all are good. Audio is so emotional, it's hard to do the perfect pick if they're neck and neck.
@tagomago @codewiz I heard the KRKs at a bar. The sound was so impressive that it convinced me to finally get something. The JBL LSR series was new at the time and getting good reviews so that's what I got. They are still a thrill.
@tagomago @kai Some friends from Italy recommended these to strike a balance between sound quality, cost and ease of connectivity to a PC:
@tagomago @kai I can get them in the US for $299. What do you think?
@tagomago @kai I said I also wanted a subwoofer, and my friend sent this video response 😂
@kai I totally approve (and you don't need anyone's approval anyway).
@codewiz I wouldn't get them for myself, but for some people, the thrill of the deal is sweeter than the actual sound.
To be fair, I live in a very modest home and drive an old used car. I spend the difference in other areas of my life where I feel I get more utility.
@kai Plus, if the utility function was the same for everyone, it would be the end of trade!
@kai Hmm... I think I'll need a monitor when my e-drumkit arrives from Japan. And maybe I'll get only one of those.
If I get back into learning to play the drums, I'll revisit the idea.
@codewiz and the same to you, of course. It's just frustrating because you're really close to the JBL/KRK/whatever range in price and there's really good sound at this level, and a lot of flexibility in how you use the gear. But it's complexity as well, of course.
@codewiz @kai Ya, also I'd check 2nd hand/pawnshops in your area. I'm sure you can get some very decent speakers for an entry-level price in the meantime (if you end up buying the monitors later).
