Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Saturday, 04-Dec-2021 23:35:11 UTC Bernie @KellyS @coldacid Yeah, I also strongly prefer coding and over managing people (or projects).
But all dream jobs get old eventually. I remained at Google for 10 years, but after 5 years I started getting bored of it. Switching to Android, moving to Japan and going 80% part-time delayed the inevitable...
I'm now trying a different industry (aerospace) and different role (firmware engineer). One day it will get old, but right now I'm so excited! 🤓🚀

KellyS (kellys@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Dec-2021 23:35:21 UTC KellyS @codewiz @coldacid All I know is my spouse was a lot happier when he was coding than he is now that he spends most of his time managing coders.
The extra pay is nice, but money isn’t everything. He’s a coder geek at heart management doesn’t scratch that itch.Eventually working for your “dream company”, becomes just another job. Especially since he’s been WFH since March 2020. Silicon Valley is a stupidly expensive place to be working from home.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Saturday, 04-Dec-2021 23:35:22 UTC Bernie @KellyS @coldacid At Google, career management was usually a distinct role from leadership of projects (called tech lead, or TL). My last manager doubled up as TL (known as a TLM). Covering both roles is highly stressful and can lead to poor technical decisions in some cases.
There's often some tension between finding good career opportunities for your reports and keeping projects lean and simple. Launching new features always looks best in promotion packages...

Problem is good coders love to code, but when you turn them into managers they get grumpy because there’s too many meetings and not enough coding. Then just spend all their free time playing an escapist video game like Animal Crossing.

Besides, my communication skills and personality aren't made for management.
