I'm curious how other server administrators are handling users' reports of various degrees of pro-Russia content at the moment. Despite my personal position on the matter, I don't think any of our current server rules cover this situation, and while I am not certain if they should, the reports do keep coming.
@TonyStark@Gargron@BalooUriza it's textbook RU disinfo to flood the discussion space with useless wrong opinions that ultimately benefit them or at least neutralize their opposition. Anyone giving "UKR are Nazis" more attention than "yes, we know, Azov Battalion sucks, that doesn't mean you can invade a country" should be treated like a witting or unwitting contributor to Russian pro-invasion interests.
@BalooUriza Well, the thing with this question is that currently I am not even sure which position you are representing. A lot of pro-Russia sentiment I see comes from Western leftists. They claim that the Ukrainians are the right-wing extremists (a claim I personally disagree with, but hence the confusion). A little bit comes from Russian users. But all could be classified as personal opinion, I don't see accounts *dedicated* to it either way.
@Gargron@ifixcoinops In the same way that the invasion forged on petty excuses has led to impose the martial law, you could use the announce feature to set some ad hoc rule of silencing propaganda accounts (maybe banning is overkill) for as long as the conflict goes, and work on a new draft of the CoC that addresses this in the meantime?
@ifixcoinops Even if I technically have the right to ban anyone, it does not exactly foster trust if there is no consistency and it's not predictable. That's why I'd rather have clear rules.
@Gargron If folk are reporting it, that's one way of telling you you've gotta have a rule, and asking you for help.
You can also ban anyone you like at any time whether they've technically broken a rule or not; it's just a website, and mastodon is even more Just A Website because folk can pack up and move to another instance pretty easily, assuming they can find a non-Russian pro-Russia server. https://mastodon.social/@ifixcoinops/105778289798706182
@Gargron fake news is used as a political weapon and should be treated as such. Brexit, Trump, anti-vaccine movements and climate change denial are results of it. They have far reaching consequences. The only issue is who will do the fact checking and how can someone contest these checks when new information reveals itself? It's a tough issue... I guess we could relay this role to reputable news agencies that have proven to be objective and truthful.
