Sure, a fully functioning and voiced vending machine, a computer that sends a *real* email to you, and a console window that opens with fancy animation for some reason are all cool, but the project was clearly mismanaged right from the get go.

Tech- and idea-wise it really looks like a missing link between HL1 and 2, or like an evolutionary branch that was growing off in another direction right then, from that relatively short window between HL1 setting the ground rules for “cinematic first person,” and HL2/Far Cry’s shader- and physics-engine-driven aesthetic that would become the norm basically forever afterwards.
