   the .social instance is the largest in the fediverse and we continually read that it has similar problems. Perhaps it is better to migrate to some smaller and actively maintained instance.

     Okay here's a newbie question.

     My Mastodon is bleeping at me all the time. They say this is saying it's because I have Notifications waiting.

     But -- when I go to the Notifications section, there's nothing like 16 new messages waiting. In fact that number never seems to change.
