When we created ODF 20+ years ago, Microsoft first laughed at the committee at OASIS, then made OOXML to render it moot, then rigged ISO to make OOXML a standard, then implemented ODF and now participates in the ODF committee and helps fund its work through COSM.

#Bluesky is Twitter's OOXML to #ActivityPub and it's at the "rigging ISO" stage.

ODF vs OOXML is not the only example.

In 1998, following the submission of VML and PGML (both vector graphics formats using XML) to W3C, a new standards working group was created, SVG, to take the best of both for the Web. Microsoft decided not to join largely because SVG used so much PGML & promoted VML in its products, implementing it in Internet Explorer and Office so SVG would suffocate and die.

24 years later, Microsoft has deprecated VML and fully implemented SVG.

Every time I have mentioned the excellent social reading network @bookwyrm, people have replied or messaged asking if there is a film & TV version. I'm not exaggerating, it is every single time, and different people each time.

Film data is (I think) available freely from Wikidata, so that side shouldn't be an issue?

There is demand for a federated film review site, its users are just waiting for it to come into existence.

Also, this is an incomplete list, there are many other Fedi projects out there such as @funkwhale or @inventaire that are not direct alternatives but are their own thing.

There's one called @owncast . It already works as a self-hosted alternative, and is currently testing Fediverse support:

The Fediverse support is only on test accounts at the moment, such as @wesley . You can already follow these test accounts from Mastodon etc and you will see posts in your feed when their streams are live.

Fediverse support will hopefully be on the release version of OwnCast soon 🤞

"The Fediverse" is more than just Mastodon. The Fediverse is many platforms that talk to each other using a common technical standard called ActivityPub.

If you're using one Fediverse platform, you can also interact with people on other Fediverse platforms, because ActivityPub connects them together.

Shares, follows, likes, comments... these things federate across the Fediverse from one platform to another. This happens so seamlessly that you may not even realise it is happening!

Try it yourself below:

@amogurumi is on PixelFed, a photo platform

@craftykat is on PeerTube, a video platform

@Jonathan is on WordPress (with WordPress ActivityPub plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub), a blogging platform

If you access these from Mastodon, they look just like Mastodon accounts, and you interact with them in the same way too.

However, if you click on their profile avatar images you will see them on their home platforms.
