Con motivo de la nueva caida de Whatsapp, les recordamos que existen alternativas descentralizadas y federadas también para la mensajería instantánea (similar a lo que ocurre con mastodon y el fediverso). En Undernet administramos dos servidores Jabber/XMPP en @buzon.uy y @undernet.uy y los registros de nuevas cuentas se solicitan únicamente por correo-e.

Los clientes para utilizar este sistema son muchos, acá hay una lista para diferentes dispositivos. Entre ellos destacamos el Conversations para Android, que puede ser instalado gratuitamente desde la tienda de aplicaciones libres F-Droid.

Share Live Location feature is comming to #matrix to selected (private or not) rooms

trust in your server admins becomes more important if you use this feature

It's a feature I requested for #xmpp also, to use it as a beacon to share with family/friends when riding my bike

This is not like "share location" as a message that includes your coordinates and correspondent can open in their device/app, it's a link to open your current location for the given time you set.

I currently use my garmin device that has such feature, but it'd be nice if I could use my own #xmpp server (I will NOT configure a matrix server for this purpose tho)

* Fixed issue with decoding OMEMO encrypted message in MUC channels
* Fixed issue with MUC participants disappearing randomly
* Fixed issue with VoIP call sending an incorrect payload during call negotiation

The conversations.im #XMPP server is now free to use. I verified the legitimacy of this message with the lead developer of the app. Pretty awesome that they decided to stop making money from something because they were able to meet their needs elsewhere, :-) #privacy

@codewiz @kzimmermann @thenewoil Not sure why #Matrix should scale better than #XMPP . Matrix synchronizes room state across all participating servers, which is much more expensive.

I never liked #Telegram in first place.

Shady homebrew crypto that once got broken, crowning themselves as "savior of #privacy" when nobody can verify the whole stack, and now this: #ads in chats.

Use #XMPP with proper #e2ee (like #OMEMO) or nothing at all. You can't have a realistic expectation of privacy otherwise.

I don't want yet another IM app, but I *do* want IM apps to interoperate enough that I don't need to care which one my friends chose to use today.

Since the decline of XMPP, there hasn't been another protocol with enough traction to get adopted by the top-tier IM apps.

Matrix tried (and is still trying) to position itself as that open standard, but I don't see other players falling over each other to add Matrix support.
