Friendica is a social network platform for the Fediverse with a Facebook-style interface. As well as being compatible with Fediverse platforms such as Mastodon etc, it also works with many other standards, for example you can add RSS feeds to your timeline.

Every account on Mastodon and the Fediverse has a unique account address, it will look something like this:

@ (username) @ (server)

You can find anyone's address by looking at their profile page, the address is written underneath their display name in a smaller font.

Account addresses are handy if you want to tell people about your account, people can paste your account address into the search box on their server which will make your profile appear.

You can see trending posts, hashtags and links on your server by browsing its "Explore" section.

-On website or web app click "Explore" or # on the right of screen

-On official apps click 🔍 magnifying glass at bottom, and leave search box empty

-On third party apps interface will vary, but usually it's called "Trending" and often in settings menu

You can customise your Mastodon profile page to include text, images, animations and links to websites, other accounts etc. Links can also be verified as belonging to you, which makes them handy in verifying your identity.

There's a recent video by @paigesaunders about why people should join Mastodon and the Fediverse.

It takes a VERY different approach to other vids you may have seen.

It's, um... very straight-talking with some strong language 😱 and written by someone who found Mastodon too confusing. This is possibly video's strength though, as it may reach people that others cannot.

If you want to, there's an option on Mastodon to hide your followers and follows lists:

1. Log in through your server’s website
2. Click on "Edit profile" if you’re on desktop website. If you’re on mobile website click on your profile icon in the top right corner, then Edit profile.
3. Click on "Privacy & Reach" tab
4. Scroll down to "Show follows and followers on profile", UN-tick this box
5. Click "Save Changes"

You will still be able to see your follows/followers, but no one else will.

Did you know you can search for emoji on Mastodon? Just paste or type the emoji you want into the search box, and the results will be posts with that emoji in them.

This also works for filters, which let you filter posts with particular emoji instead of particular words.

(I didn't know this, but thanks to @ahimsa_pdx for pointing it out!)

You can use Mastodon's filter system to automatically hide posts containing certain words or phrases or hashtags. The posts can either be hidden behind a warning, or just hidden completely.

Although they're usually used for hiding offensive material, filters can be used for any reason. Some people use filters to avoid spoilers of an upcoming film, others use them to filter out Wordle posts for example.

If you're posting a link on Mastodon, you'll probably want to add https:// to the beginning so it is clickable.

For example fedi.tips isn't clickable but https://fedi.tips is clickable.

The reason https:// is required is in case people want to include dots in words or phrases without accidentally creating links.

p.s. Techy people might like to know that many non-web link types also work on here: https://, http://, gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// ssb://

If you're tagged in a conversation you don't want to take part in, you can mute the conversation's notifications:

1. Go to one of your posts in the thread you want to mute
2. Click ⋯ and select Mute conversation
3. If you haven’t posted in the thread, go to a post in the thread where you were tagged, then select ⋯ and Mute conversation
4. If you still can’t find this option, go to your Notifications section, then click ⋯ and Mute conversation on one of the conversation’s posts there

Little tip for people using Mastodon's multicolumn advanced web interface:

You can extend the number of columns by clicking the slider icon in the top right corner of a column and selecting "pin".

There is no slider icon on profiles BUT you can pin particular accounts:

1. Create a new list
2. Add the account you want to the list
3. Pin the list

You will then have a column pinned which only contains posts by that account (and of course you can add more accounts to that list if you want).

Also, apologies for the now-deleted post about finding people on Twitter, the tool possibly had some error messages, but will check on its status and re-post if needed.

Mastodon has a post editing feature which lets you make changes to your posts after they've been published.

Here's how to edit:

1. Go to the post
2. Click ⋯
3. Click "Edit"
4. Make the changes you want (including adding or removing attachments, or adding alt text or polls)
5. Click "Save Changes"

⚠️ NOTE:

To prevent abuse, every edit sends a notification to everyone who has interacted with post.

Editing poll options resets poll votes to zero without warning.

You cannot edit post visibility.

You can edit polls, but if you edit the options on the poll it resets the numbers to zero.

If you edit a post in any way, that will be notified to everyone who interacted with it, whether they are mentioned or not.

There's also a link on the edited post to show all the previous versions of the post.

You see the entire text of all the previous versions. Click on "Edited" and then select one of the versions, it will show you the text in that version.
