We anticipated then that #ActivityPub would one day allow federated search among MediaGoblin instances (still waiting for that BTW ;) but we never imagined a new package doing that *and* using #WebTorrent to allow users help instances stream videos, as they watch. This is a good example of why I'm so hopeful about the future and why fatalistic predictions are so often wrong. There's just so much that can't be predicted, no matter how much you know about the present state of a system #ChaosTheory

It's hard to believe that in only two years we've gone from scratching our heads over #GoblinRefuge.com becoming a semi-centralized supernode of #MediaGoblin hosting:
    https://trisquel.info/en/forum/small-issue-goblinrefuge

... to a thriving federated network of #PeerTube sites:

Along similar lines, I heard an interview today on #RadioNZ with pioneering economist and former National Party MP Marilyn Waring, who pointed at that the voluntary sector - if you include all unpaid work including in the home - is larger than any other sector of the economy, in every country where it's been studied. But who cares about our "jobs" when election time rolls around?

Sure, newspaper website, I'll turn off my ad-blocker and #NoScript for your site. When you turn off all the #JavaScript that tracks me and makes my browser crash, so all I see is static placed ads, just like I would if I read your print edition.

#Dreamwidth have expressed interest in implementing #ActivityPub, and are asking for detailed information on how to do that. Any suggestions for links to give them?

The other day on #RadioNZ, a couple of panelists got into a detailed discussion about education policy, and Katherine Ryan cut them off, telling them they were getting distracted from "politics". This sums up exactly what's going wrong with political reporting in NZ, it's become about reporting on politicians, not reporting on *policy*. What used to be sneered as by serious newsrooms as "tabloid" scandal-mongering is now all the political news we get on mainstream channels. #FakeNews much?

@teslas_moustache @klaatu > PDF kinda needs to die anyway

Why do you say that? It covers a much wide range of use cases than .epub. It's a #CommonFormat now that the relevant patents have expired, supported by a wide range of #FreeCode apps. Whereas I've had a lot of trouble finding free code apps that can open and properly render .epub files.

I heard on #RadioNZ today that the Fijian government are planning to pass laws forcing FB and other online platforms to crack down on "#FakeNews". So ... who gets to decide which news is fake? Governments? Tech companies? There's no doubt the internet, like all media, is subject to misinformation and disinformation. But scientists and other scholars don't find truth by consulting central authorities, they do it by #PeerReview. Isn't that the way to do it with news?

#TradeMe is an auction site used almost exclusively by kiwis, but owned by overseas corporations like Fairfax. Imagine if it was a #PlatformCooperative, owned by it's users.

Reasons for clicking favourite on things can include saving them to read, to listen to, or to watch, or to research, to respond to, and many people just use 'favourite' as an 'I agree' button (why they don't just boost things they like enough to click a button to agree with I don't know, but ...). I'd love to be able to sort my 'favourites' into categories, so I could click 'watch' if I'm looking for videos. Even better if I could sort worky videos separately from entertainment videos.

#DocumentViewer opened the .pdf and .epub files, no problem, but I can't find a way to make it zoom the text to a comfortable size *and* wrap the words to the screen width at the same time.

#ComfortReader looks promising, but it doesn't seem to be able to open a .pdf on #Android 4.2.2, and trying to open an .epub made it crash.

Two things Gavin, 1) one of your examples is totally different from the others, in a whole bunch of fundamental and important ways (don't believe the #OpenWashing), and 2) cities and countries *have* banned the first three, in a number of cases, but never even considered banning the last one, because of fundamental differences mentioned in point 1)

The idea that private hierarchies are inherently more "efficient" at running things than public administration, non-profits, or commons, has been disproved so many times by examples like these, it boggles the mind that some people still believe it.

Crisis averted ;-P I installed the #Dialer2 app from #FDroid, and I can make calls again. Now I'm curious about whether I can remove the built-in Contacts app and its accompanying bits and bobs, and replace it with a #FreeCode address book? If so, can I then sync my contacts with #DavDroid and #NextCloud? New toys ...
