We anticipated then that #ActivityPub would one day allow federated search among MediaGoblin instances (still waiting for that BTW ;) but we never imagined a new package doing that *and* using #WebTorrent to allow users help instances stream videos, as they watch. This is a good example of why I'm so hopeful about the future and why fatalistic predictions are so often wrong. There's just so much that can't be predicted, no matter how much you know about the present state of a system #ChaosTheory

But who cares about our "jobs" when election time rolls around?

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 03:07:12 UTC Strypey The other day on #RadioNZ, a couple of panelists got into a detailed discussion about education policy, and Katherine Ryan cut them off, telling them they were getting distracted from "politics". This sums up exactly what's going wrong with political reporting in NZ, it's become about reporting on politicians, not reporting on *policy*. What used to be sneered as by serious newsrooms as "tabloid" scandal-mongering is now all the political news we get on mainstream channels. #FakeNews much?

Why do you say that? It covers a much wide range of use cases than .epub. It's a #CommonFormat now that the relevant patents have expired, supported by a wide range of #FreeCode apps. Whereas I've had a lot of trouble finding free code apps that can open and properly render .epub files.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Dec-2018 07:45:24 UTC Strypey I heard on #RadioNZ today that the Fijian government are planning to pass laws forcing FB and other online platforms to crack down on "#FakeNews". So ... who gets to decide which news is fake? Governments? Tech companies? There's no doubt the internet, like all media, is subject to misinformation and disinformation. But scientists and other scholars don't find truth by consulting central authorities, they do it by #PeerReview. Isn't that the way to do it with news?

I'd love to be able to sort my 'favourites' into categories, so I could click 'watch' if I'm looking for videos. Even better if I could sort worky videos separately from entertainment videos.
