GS's active development resumed past summer. For now it is just receiving some small updates and maintaining but we will be working on exciting upgrades during the summer :)
current codebase: https://notabug.org/diogo/gnu-social
Part of the roadmaps for version two:
https://www.diogo.site/projects/GNU-social/soc/2019/proposals/network.pdf
https://www.diogo.site/projects/GNU-social/soc/2019/proposals/load.pdf
Some of the goals in a vague way: https://www.diogo.site/projects/GNU-social/soc/2019/
LoadAverage, Colegota and some other instances are already using the latest version. This is not just a fork of GS, we will be merging it all by the end of summer on git.gnu.io. -
Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Apr-2019 23:20:24 UTC Diogo Cordeiro But you should, maybe we can organize a GNU social meetup here in Porto by the end of summer to celebrate the release of version 2 xD -

Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Sunday, 03-Feb-2019 13:03:11 UTC Diogo Cordeiro Okay, just read about what Mastalab is and you definitely shouldn't be using qvitter API given that some instances (like the one I'm using) don't have that plugin installed.
About getting notifications, I've been using @andstatus and it is very competent in notifying me, so I guess maybe that app developer might be able to provide you with the required guidance. Or you can just look for the bit of code handling that on AndStatus, it is FLOSS :) -

Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Saturday, 02-Feb-2019 15:18:51 UTC Diogo Cordeiro Hey, I have worked on the ActivityPub plugin past summer and intend to resume this summer.
The work done in 2018 was documented here: https://go.diogo.site/gsoc2018
Help is appreciated for https://go.diogo.site/gsoc2019 , and now the landing page is even more fancy, it has got a video and all xD -

Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Monday, 21-Jan-2019 14:14:31 UTC Diogo Cordeiro I would rather be co-maintainer, I think it is important for GS to have you as the project maintainer, you were there since the beginning and kept the project safe from contradictory ideologies. We all have more or less free time in different seasons. And thus I don't think one should leave his position in a FLOSS just because someone new has more free time for now. Yu have always made clear that I could look for you in case I needed help or were unable to understand something, I think this, the multiple threads were you participate to debate things that concern GS, and the fact that you have been actively using GS is more than enough to prove your active interest in the project despite currently not being able to actively develop or even maintain it. -
Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Monday, 21-Jan-2019 00:18:45 UTC Diogo Cordeiro Yours concerns about big corporations are understandable and I share them (although I won't deny using their services sometimes, I guess I'm a fixer-upper). But sometimes those organizations do good things too and GSoC is an example of that.
My activity past summer in GNU social was sponsored by GSoC, and receiving some income for the time I've dedicated was helpful. I have friends that have to work on the summer in order to help their families. Programs like GSoC allow them to contribute to the FLOSS community while receiving some important money for doing something they enjoy.
GS in GSoC was something I have asked MMN-o for past year but it was ultimately possible thanks to GNU acting as an umbrella organization for its packages. I think GNU understands that GSoC is not something harmful as it brings students to the Open Source world.
I feel that GNU social needs more developers and I believe GSoC can help with that. Finally, even if those developers may help only for the money in the beginning (it wasn't my case but it is legit for the above mentioned reasons), they will eventually fall in love by GS like us and will be helping whenever possible even without the GSoC income. ;) -

Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Sunday, 20-Jan-2019 17:45:54 UTC Diogo Cordeiro Hey @mmn !
As I've said in IRC (It seems you aren't there :/ ), I'm looking forward to be a mentor this summer in GS's SoC (as I won't have the required time to participate as a student). Therefore I believe we can host a max of 3 students (me, dansup and you)! ^^
Let me know what you think of the ideas page: https://www.diogo.site/projects/gsoc2019/

Diogo Cordeiro (diogo@loadaverage.org)'s status on Saturday, 25-Aug-2018 23:42:01 UTC Diogo Cordeiro The ActivityPub plugin is able to interact properly with Mastodon (that was the only we tested it with so far so it might be working with others as well, we just haven't tested yet).
Despite that, it has some known key issues stopping it from being merged:
* It is unable to de-duplicate when OStatus and ActivityPub are both enabled - mostly noticed between GS instances with both enabled.
* Is unable to verify signatures which is an attack vector that makes the plugin unsafe for use right now.
* It also doesn't make use of queues nor collections caching nor has any kind of circuit breaker implemented. This makes its use risky for use in a highly active GS instance.
Right now I've been mostly fixing GS issues and resting a bit from the intense work on the plugin - and have been training for competitive programming :)
@dansup will test (or has tested, not sure) the plugin with Pixelfed and was going to fix those issues but Pixelfed has been consuming so much time from him that I will probably have to code the whole plugin by myself :(
@mmn is also looking forward to bring GS back to active development so I think the future is bright for !gnusocial :) cc: @chimo
