Every small server on the network is a potential spammer or botnet member.
A villain creates accounts on thousands of servers, and then sends spam. This creates a burden.
You can have one user, but thousands of servers can be connected to it. One user will create a load equal to this thousand users.
There are few users and few servers in the matrix, so they are not faced with the problems of the XMPP, when resilience is a necessity even for small servers.

We can not run the server Matrix,
because 4 core + 4GB is not enough for 700 users online.
On some days, there were over 3 million messages on the XMPP. +1GB database per day. Matrix server is not designed for such a load.

The server matrix supports only one core in a multi-core processor. Matrix protocol is bloated and uses resources more than 10 times more than XMPP.Consumption is 10 times more than a rough count, some say consumption is 50 or even 100 times more if an attack occurs.
WhatsApp uses XMPP with 1000 000 000 users. XMPP ready industrial standard. Matrix not ready for global use.

Yes, Kontalkt it's an open XMPP server, but a closed messenger. It allows you to search for people by phone numbers. For some people, searching by phone numbers is preferable.
