    Oh i agree but I was hoping you would realize .

    I find it interesting as a test of people when I talk about population being self-regulating, when I do people go to one of two camps:

    1)
    liberals (solve everything through government regulation) ->

    The focus tends to be largely what yours are, that is talking about the wars and the lack of education. In general the focus here is on what governments didnt do to fix the problem:

    conservatives (self-regulation) ->

    Here the focus is on the need of the parent to want to have kids and how that may and how those who have too many kids for what they can feed are ultimately to blame for having too many kids.

    Here's why the circle has 360 degrees: around 2400 B.C., the ancient Sumerians noticed the Sun's annual path across the sky was ~ 360 days. In order to track the Sun's motion, they decided to divide the circle in 360 degrees. https://t.co/IIy8uoCC16

    Yea the point where, on average, every family can afford just enough food to feed themselves and 2 kids :)

    Sounds like that is just a fancy way of saying the population will stop growing naturally once we dont have enough resources to sustain it :)

    @drabard It is not so much the words that need to be well deined or not. We can use well defined words just as liberally in a poetic context.. "HEr eyes burned with star light" I'm pretty sure we all know here that literal fusion reactions arent taking place in her eyes :)

    @Wetrix I dont think anyone has seen an actual debate in a 100 years :) I'm exaggerating of course but truth is mature debates are fairly non existent these days, at least on the internet.

    Even in person they only tend to exist in the USA and the UK between people who still mostly agree. The rest of europe is ok though

    @timorl I find being clear about what word your using and what it means is critical to having any sort of meaningful understanding or a useful stance on any issue. So often I ind peoples words sound poetic, moving, and insightful, but in reality its just because a word is left open to interpritation and everyone fits their own assumption about the word in there. So its really just smoke and mirrors.

    I think people do this intentionally this way they can argue in whatever direction they want and "fill in" what the word meant later to suit the argument.

    Recent discussions reminded me of this experience, so I wanted to share it.

    When I was a good Catholic child I remember 1-2 years of constantly hearing a message from any church-related official I encountered. It wasn't every time or every lesson, or every sermon, but it appeared consistently enough that it was a theme for those couple of years. The message was lamenting over the state of society, in which people looked for meaning in buying and owning things, constantly acquiring more useless stuff. Everyone agreed this was bad and sad and crazy that people actually did that. This message was also topical, since it happened in a country that was just starting to reap benefits from the move to a freer market, so it referred to an actual phenomenon.

    Oh, and obviously because it was about people finding meaning in material things, this was called "materialism".

    Imagine my surprize many years later when I learned what "materialism" actually meant. This seems to me like an act of relatively subtle propaganda, make a huge swath of people associate the word for a philosophical position you don't like with something obviously stupid. I'm not completely sure this was intentional, but the coordination and consistent choice of words makes me very suspicious.

    This is why it's sometimes necessary to squabble over meanings of words. In particular when they are being used to distort reality, introduce false equivalences or "taint" words with meanings that shouldn't be associated with them. It's good to always keep discussions closer to being about reality, but for humans perception of reality is very much filtered through words, so they cannot be ignored.

    @Wetrix You mean QOTO? Just a place for STEM interested individuals or professionals to hang out. We dont have any topic requirements though or enforce a feed much beyond showing respect for others.

    We basically want to get away from the childishness and mutual attacks and deal with people arguing our disagreements as STEM professionals do, respectfully and using evidence and no personal attacks. Presuming there is a disagreement at all, most of the time we just post nerdy videos we all enjoy.

    If i werent a figure head for QOTO and a moderator I'd like lock down my follower count. But I have to play a different role for the sake of the server really.

    @Wetrix Thats far more important.

    I get about 70 new followers a day, 50 of whom are just new signups to my instance that I likely will never hear from again in 2.3rds of those cases. The others tend to be genuine people from around the fediverse, but even then not always the most engaged followers in terms of percentages.

    My feed can be hard to keep up with to the point that I just stop replying to a lot of the noise.
