A Guide To Protocols Used In The Fediverse.
Diaspora: Clunky XML behemoth with some degree of privacy, a fuck tonne of metadata that has to be stored even by complete strangers.
DFRN: Clunky as fuck XML behemouth, but damn well works, with pretty good privacy, but by God, it makes your head spin.
Zot: On paper, the best of the lot, light weight, nomadic, more powerful and simpler than the others...but nobody understands permissions, so it's pointless.
Ostatus: Shouting at people anonymously.
ActivityPub: Privacy, as imagined by somebody with no actual experience of implementing privacy, reimplementing mistakes made by everyone else nearly a decade ago. -

I don't know whether to commend the bravery of somebody trying to make OStatus private (ProTip: You can't catch water in net), or break down in hysterics at the fatuousness of the implementation.

It depends on who you are. But I would actually say that the culture building within Mastodon is toxic, and I don't say this lightly. The problem with safe spaces is that it's not just bad for outsiders, but it is also bad for insiders. Also for the people trying to fit in. With GS, I feel like most of it was about embracing free software... but people didn't have to follow the same politics. Obviously, there were some clashes but people knew they could create their own platform with their own ideas... and I didn't feel so closed off. We had to learn to get along more. But this new main culture refuse to get along, they don't want to compromise... they want it their way without any regard for how others feel. They don't extend the same expectations that they want others to follow and apply it to themselves. How can you have a dialogue with that? I don't know... I got a bad impression from them. I can internalise emotional atmospheres, and their one was toxic. Even to hear people feeling like mastodon was about that culture, and watching them shun new and old instances that don't follow the new standard is overwhelming to me. -

A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's McNuggets(tm). Never minding the strange order, he immediately offers the nuggets to her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's McNuggets(tm) to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he eat McNuggets(tm) with is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the Mcdonald's own McChicken (tm), who too is blissfully unaware of her lunch.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their juiciest, most expensive McDonalds(tm) menu items in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE and a side of fries. -
