Since I'm seeing a new wave of people saying they plan to leave Twitter, you may like my browser tool that takes the zip file of your Twitter export and returns a zip file of a web site that lets people browse and search your tweets. You can just upload the files wherever you normally host html and it'll work just fine.

Doing a little victory dance because today #Hometown's "exclusive lists" feature was merged into Mastodon. Which means once it is part of a release, that is one less thing for me to maintain. Everything is going according to plan :AngelDevil:

Please read about Alaa Abd El-Fattah, the activist, blogger, and open source software dev. He is currently on full hunger strike in an Egyptian prison. #freealaa

If you are on Twitter and want to find people who have opened accounts over here, someone made a little tool that scrapes Fediverse handles (and email addresses, since a lot of people drop the leading @) from the Twitter bios and display names of people you follow over there

Checked our server queues and the 28th saw us handle double the federated events as we did on the 27th. We are officially in another influx spike.

On track to double yet again today. It'll die down, it always does, but the Fediverse always comes out of these influxes a little more lively at baseline, and a little stronger (imo)

My favorite Mastodon 3.5.0+ feature is that if you have full text search on your server, you can search for

    "from:username@anyserver.whatever foobar"

And it will filter search results for just posts made by username@anyserver.whatever. This is a further refinement to the existing search, so the limitation of "posts that either were made by you or you have favorited, bookmarked, or are replies to you" still applies. It's SO MUCH EASIER to search through my old posts now.

I've released version 2.0.0 of my RSS to ActivityPub converter! This now provides functionality I'd hacked in to https://rss.friend.camp - it requires OAuth 2.0 authorization for someone to create a new AP account for an RSS feed.

I used to run this service "in the open" but was overwhelmed by spammers. Now the admin of a Mastodon (or Pleroma or any federated server that is an OAuth 2 provider) can provide this converter as a service solely to members of their instance.

I took snippets of the DEC BASIC-8 manual for the TSS/8 operating system and inserted them into a poetry generator. This is the poem. (The randomizer runs the same every time (no seeds though I could fake it) so this is in a sense *the* output.)

I've been building a Facebook Events style event organizing system for the Fediverse. It's based on the simple, open source, privacy-respecting event organizing tool https://gath.io

The attached video is a work-in-progress preview and shows compatibility with Mastodon. My hope is to get it working with lots of software, including stuff like Friendica that supports events and calendars.

I'm pleased to announce the v1.0.0 release of Hometown, my Mastodon fork! It's up to date with Mastodon v2.9.3, and unique features include:

    - Local only posting
    - Full support for rendering incoming `Article` posts from federated blogs like Write. As
    - "Exclusive" lists that let you follow someone without clogging up your home timeline

For more info, including rationale for each new feature, check out our wiki:

    https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki

Fun way to find random documents. Go to Google search, and search for

    filetype:pdf the

Feel free to replace the word "the" with any other innocuous word. You'll get a bunch of random PDFs.

    Another fun constraint:

    filetype:pdf site:org the

This will return PDFs by ".org" domains (mostly nonprofits) so you get a bunch of random reports.

    Also try

    filetype:pdf "internal use only"

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.

This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.

I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

Oh, and I'm releasing my own fork of Mastodon based on my experiences running Friend Camp for a year. It's called Hometown, and you can read more about it here:

    https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown

It's not fully documented yet but it will be. Experienced Mastodon admins should be able to switch over with a minor database migration and minimal fuss.

I finished my stint as a Mozilla Fellow and now I'm relaunching my Patreon with a focus on, well, fixing social media.

This means I'm going to continue my concerted work trying to make the fediverse a better place, in the form of best practice guides for running instances, external advocacy, and technical tutorials and training so that more people can contribute software to the fediverse at large.

You can read a partial summary of my work so far at my new Patreon page!

Oh wow. So that really famous centralized vs decentralized vs distributed diagram that I quote above? Well, in one of the companion papers, Baran provides this iteration on it, which in my opinion is far superior and I'm going to start using in my presentations.
