@sydneyfalk (cont)
And by having instances with reputation, of course you'll end with closed gardens where only certain people can join, which would be the next big problem.
But building or losing reputation is something only humans can do, for now at least.

@sydneyfalk I find it as a too difficult task to do in a distributed network. The only way to make a system not explotable by humans is to have humans keeping a watch on others.
I think, in mastodon's context, the trust system can be solved by having trustable servers. "You can only join this instance if you're a public figure", for example, so users know those accounts are real. What would matter then is the instance, not the amount of followers.

@sydneyfalk this is how politics work outside social networks.
You (the party) make the road for a lot of people from different groups to attract people, and when it is needed, you choose one of those. The selected becomes the candidate, and all the other groups try to convert their followers to them (so they can have political power over the candidate. Followers is money)

This sounds cliché, but I understand how you feel right now. I've been through it, and I'm sure I'll be through again, because that's how our brains work when we get depressed.
But worry not, since tomorrow will be a better day. Aim for improving yourself and try to fix what makes you feel unhappy, since that's the only way out of this rabbit hole.
(sorry my words are not as inspiring as I'd like them to be, but they're honest - I hope they make u feel better)

@finalstate sadly, a ton of ESP* come with hardware/firmware failures. Some only need you to update the firmware, but others come with broken antennas.

@moonman Skype was mostly p2p. Some parts of it still are, but they're going the centralized route now.

Ha. I understand your frustration now.
