@Nezchan @lain @Pasty thus, twitter works by personalized recommendations (which are good, but keep you always close with people that share your mindset or likes), and the fediverse promotes discoverality by common interests (your instance's timeline) and by groups (there might be an instance where everyone shares a common interest with you, where you can meet new people from that instance)

@Nezchan @lain @Pasty by for profit I do not mean promoted twits, but companies posting things for the sake of having a presence on the cool social network. Twitter promotes: following your friends and the artists or companies you like, but finding people outside of your bubble becomes difficult. You can search for hashtags you like, or for what's trending today, but the site shows you trending posts based on what it already knows about you.

@Nezchan @Pasty @lain also, birdsite is full of bots and for-profit accounts, and there's no way to distinguish between a real person and a for-profit post from a single twit. In mastodon, we build trust on instances instead of single persons. We know that some instances punish bots, and we also know that some instances are meant for bots. That makes a lot simpler to find humans to interact with.

@eal after re-reading what I said today, I realized I was very aggresive.
We were discussing about something that wasn't part of the original posts of @Gargron, and I can't even find the quote you're reffering to.
After re-reading the texts, I see no mention of _what is_ mastodon, but _what can you do with it_. It also mentions open protocols such as atom, webfinger and others.

I'm not even sure what we were discussing anymore.

For some reason youtube decided to only show me songs about depression or suicide. Maybe someone at YouTube is trying a new KYS algorithm?

@Gargron @eal I get what you're saying, but the focus of that text is for new users and should not need understanding of how the technology behind mastodon works. How would you phrase it in a way to explain how big mastodon currently is, while explaining the fediverse in a way your grandma can understand, while also keeping it simple? I'm with @Gargron on this one because his way of phrasing it only requires knowing what email is.
