@xj9 @trev retrofitting encryption to gnusocial would be a mistake. It's not really designed for privacy. -

@hector indeed, so if for example a Beaglebone retailer wanted me to post an ad on their behalf and paid me to do it I don't think I'd object because their aims would be broadly in line with my own. -

On gnusocial there isn't anything to stop particular servers being Twitterized. If I were so inclined (I'm not) I could insert commercial crap into my stream in exchange for sufficient remuneration.
Something like that was discussed in the Q&A of Eben Moglen's "Freedom in the Cloud" talk from 2010. At least if that situation happens there's a direct transaction between the advertiser and the server admin, cutting out the usual middlemen, like Google or Facebook. -

The great thing about gnusocial is that there aren't any bribed posts, so brands can't so easily get into my stream as they can on Twitter. -

Stream post updates are back to a normal level, so I guess this exodus is over and we can all go back to complaining about mastodon as usual. -

explanations of federation abound, with "social media" experts struggling to understand how they are going to monetize it. -

@Gargron @tsyesika So if you are interested in server-to-server only, follow https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#server-to-server-interactions and ignore section 7

I read Cyber-Proletariat when I was leaving Manchester last year. It was ok and makes a few relevant points. One that I particularly remember is the ambiguous class status of the hacker or maker - as an artisan not fully proletarianized and with influences from both Labour and Capital.

@schestowitz Sounds bad, and could explain the latest exodus to Mastodon/gnusocial. I only use it through Twidere and Choqok, so I probably don't see the worst of it. -

@dredmorbius @eileenb Really, an admin that deserves some attention and praise is Hannes of quitter.se. He's been steering that ship for a long time now, many years, and always kept things steady. He's also weathered several twitter migrations to quitter itself with grave.
