Open letter: #Feneas in the future

    Dear Feneas,

It has been almost three years since we decided to found and build this #organisation. In the last few years we have achieved great things and grown as a #community and organisation.

I never expected that we would now have over 60 members (from all over the world https://portal.feneas.org/users/map). That is great!

Unfortunately, we also have some negative things to report. One big issue is #finances. With the membership fee we can hardly stay online. Originally, the membership fee was only meant as a confirmation for us that a new member is serious about joining. The reality is that we cannot maintain the quality/maintenance of all services with only 60 euros a month. It has happened more than once now that board members have had to pay bills out of their own pockets.

What makes it worse is that 60 euros is the theoretical number. In practice, we are chasing members every year to pay the recurring fee. We are way behind in our payments.. again...

That's why we decided to start an annual #fundraising #campaign. We have hundreds of users every day. I am sure we can find some support here.

Keep Feneas alive by making a contribution! Because the only other option would be to shut down the services or even to shut down Feneas :\

    https://donorbox.org/feneas

    Thanks and keep federating,
    Lukas and the Feneas Band

WP to diaspora* 3.0.1 is out, in search of new maintainers!

Hello to all diasporians using WordPress! 👋

After having been under low-maintenance mode for almost 3 years, I've released the latest version 3.0.1 of the WP to diaspora https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-to-diaspora/ plugin.

On this note, the project has come to a halt and is looking for new maintainers, since both lead developers aren't using it actively any more.
So this is an official shout-out to any and all developers who would like to continue working on it.
The repository is public and of course open to contributions:
    - github.com/DiasPHPora/wp-to-di…

Just get in touch with https://noplanman.ch if you're interested and willing to take part in maintaining it.

It has been a fun ride and now time has come for new energy to flow into it. 💚

    Yours, Armando and Augusto
(We highly appreciate all shares of this post, to get the word out further, thanks a lot! 🙏)

How to easily integrate OnlyOffice into Nextcloud

Newer releases of the Nextcloud platform offer capabilities for collaborative online document editing. This is made possible through one of two potential connectors: Collabora Online https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/richdocuments, and https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/onlyoffice. Both suites have their pros and cons, but today we'll be taking a look at how to work with OnlyOffice.

It's a common misconception that OnlyOffice is either proprietary, or a paid-only SaaS platform. In spite of its enterprise-heavy corporate site, OnlyOffice is in fact available under v3 of the GNU Affero Public License, which is pretty standard for libre web platforms.

Before we begin, it's worth noting that this installation method is better suited towards small or personal Nextcloud instances. For medium to large-scale instances of Nextcloud, it's generally recommended to instead install the official external document server.

Step 1 - Install the Community Document Server App

The Nextcloud App Store offers a convenient backend application https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/documentserver_community that installs the OnlyOffice Community Document Server within an existing Nextcloud application. Installation is relatively straightforward, as the app itself can be found within the Apps management section.

Some users may experience an error message when attempting to install the package through the Nextcloud admin UI. If that happens, it's recommended to attempt the installation through the Nextcloud command client tool like so:

    occ app:install documentserver_community

It's also worth double-checking that your Nextcloud installation is up to date, as older versions may still have problems.

Step 2 - Install the Connector

After setting up the Document Server app, you'll still need to enable the OnlyOffice connector https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/onlyoffice, so that Nextcloud can associate Microsoft Office and OpenDocument files with the OnlyOffice app you just enabled.

Step 3 - Start Using It!

Now that the connector is installed, you'll be able to start using the Document Server right away. Instead of having a dedicated tab specifically for document editing, the integration is baked right into the file manager. You can easily create new documents as actions, like so:

Note: currently, this actions menu only creates Microsoft Office files.

Or you can click on existing documents within the Nextcloud file manager, which automatically takes you to the editing interface.

    Version 0.12

We're excited to release WriteFreely v0.12 https://github.com/writeas/writefreely/releases/tag/v0.12.0, our biggest update yet! This version comes with a ton of great features for communities and organizations, and officially moves WriteFreely into the beta stage — just a few steps away from version 1.0.

Besides our new features and performance improvements, this update also includes plenty of contributions from new members of the community! Thank you to everyone who helped out, whether you contributed code or tested our release candidate!

    Major Features

    ActivityPub Mentions (T627 https://writefreely.org/tasks/627)

Enable more interaction with your posts by mentioning users on Mastodon, Pleroma, and other ActivityPub platforms! Users on instances with federation enabled can now insert @handle@their.instance to mention someone. You might use this to write a long response to someone in the fediverse, or even mention your own microblogging account, so that replies to your blog post also notify you there, where you can continue the conversation.

    New Admin Dashboard (T694 https://writefreely.org/tasks/694)

We've redesigned the admin dashboard to be a little easier to navigate, and generally more user friendly. It now includes an overview of stats for your instance, dedicated pages for app settings and monitoring, and more details on what each configuration option does. We've also made it easier for admins to get to the “Invite people” page.

    OAuth 2.0 Support (#225)

Now you can authenticate with your WriteFreely instance via OAuth https://matt.writefreely.dev/oauth-support-in-writefreely! This is perfect for WriteFreely communities that are set up to accompany other platforms. We support three providers so far: GitLab, Slack, and Write.as.

    Reader Filter Updates (#269)

Now the Reader will show the most recent 250 public posts, instead of only the last three months of public posts. This should be much more fitting for most WriteFreely instances.

    Plain Text Import

Now you can import plain text files to publish them as posts on WriteFreely.

    User-Facing Changes / Fixes

    • Show dates on blog posts (T669 https://writefreely.org/tasks/669, #276)
    • Show post publish dates in local time (T670 https://writefreely.org/tasks/670)

    Upgrading from v0.11.x and v0.12.0rc1

Download the latest release for your operating system. Stop running your writefreely service, replace all files in your installation with the ones in the archive, and then start your writefreely service again.

Now make sure your database is backed up, and update it with:
    writefreely db migrate

No additional steps are needed to upgrade from v0.11.x. Follow the instructions in each previous #release if you're upgrading from an earlier version.

    ### FYI The #Feneas Matrix server will go down in a bit for migration to the new cluster

After several dry-runs and some failed attempts, I think we're confident to move things over :P

**IMPORTANT** Final sync of media has already started to the new cluster. Media uploaded between now and the migration may or may not be moved over.

The downtime for the migration will be approx 2-3 hours. If you do want to keep tabs on the migration status, please join using another alias, for example `#feneas:federator.dev`, from another account than 1) feneas.org matrix server or 2) telegram (which goes via the latter).

Server will go down in approx ... 30-45 minutes, depending when the media sync finishes (Synapse needs to be running). Then approx 2 hours of database moving around and importing. If no problems, things should be finished in about exactly 3 hours from now.

Post-mortem on our partial service outage.

In January we started moving to a new #Kubernetes based setup. During or immediately after #FOSDEM we managed to move over almost all of our services from the old #Rancher 1.x based setup. Two services remained - #Matrix, #Riot and the association homepage.

Today 17th March approx 11am UTC the Matrix server, our #Riot and the homepage went offline due to the LetsEncrypt certificate expiring. Normally this certificate would have auto-renewed, but this did not any more work with our old Rancher.

Unfortunately due to mail delivery failures which we're still looking into, we didn't get LetsEncrypt warnings about the certificate expiring or the Uptimerobot alerts when the services became unavailable. Naturally alertmanager monitoring into our admin room went through the Matrix server, so we didn't receive those either.

The admin team was however alerted about the failure very soon after the cert expired but unfortunately key admins that had experience with the old setup we're tied up at work. When a new certificate was finally received from LetsEncrypt, Rancher decided to push one more stick into the wheels by refusing to restore the load balancer to a working condition.

After flaky networking for a few hours while the admins juggled work, commute and fighting load balancers, reliable service was finally restored to the Matrix and Riot instances at approx 6:45pm UTC. It should hopefully be catching up and soon be back to normal.

Migration of the Matrix parts will be done asap during the next week or so to the new Kubernetes setup. This should avoid things falling apart due to legacy stuff that only a few people in the team knew how it works.

Sorry for the inconvenience for any users on the #Feneas Matrix server 🤗
