@hckr my main problem with mastodon is that they block instances and users, without letting their people know that they block instances and users. so everyone who comes onto MTD doesn't see what the rest of the fediverse is, because nobody tells them. and since people like you or i can't tell them otherwise (which we should, due to how federation works), they won't move to a more suitable instance. this is fine on a small scale, but successful shilling has provided a gigantic spike in MTD's userbase, adding more people to the walled garden -

@rwdigest @rw as much as i like online, social worlds, it's just a fancy interface for regular communication. gnu social, imageboards, (((discord))), and whatever else you want to think of, is just IRC with more or less features. and IRC is just an email list but more real-time.
i've played so many damn video games that i've started to "see the code", and i don't think i'm alone in this. it's easy to recognize systems and variables and how things work, and it keeps me from seeing what the devs want me to see. it loses the magic, and illusion, and it's hard to see as more than the sum of its parts. so i think if we replace life with a shitty video game, the illusion of life will be impossible to keep up.
furthermore, what's the fucking purpose? this would be neat for social interaction, but the buck stops there. any form of science, maths, engineering, any of the shit that actually matters, is based intimately on the natural laws of the universe, and not the made-up laws of a man-made video game.
my last point: there's a separation between anonymous and nominal(?) interaction, and for good reason. committing to the matrix initially maximizes the first, but it morphs into the second. i have a real life and an internet life, and i love each one, but i would NEVER bring them together. say what you will about the show, but Serial Experiments Lain brought up a good example of what it be like if the two merged. like Lain, im an asshole online but pretty quiet and friendly irl. i understand the difference, and i would rather die than have them reversed.
so sorry, i'll pass on joining the matrix. i may use the internet 24/7, but i still keep it 2 feet away from my face -
