Bear in mind that this isn't a clout-based network! There is no algorithm here, and follower numbers won't make your posts appear higher on any timelines.

It is totally fine to have small follower numbers, you don't have to prove anything on here :blob_cat_heart:

Do you want to embed posts from Mastodon on your blog or website? Here's how:

1. Log in through your server's website
2. Go to the post you want to embed, click ⋯ and "Embed"
3. Copy and paste the HTML code into your own blog or website

Media people using Mastodon might want to especially take notice, this is how you can feature posts from here in your stories.

Three tips for people using #Mastodon through a computer:

1. You can stop timelines scrolling automatically by going to Preferences > Slow Mode, tick box and click "Save Changes".

2. There are loads of "hidden" keyboard shortcuts. Press shift + ? (or just ? on some keyboards) to see a complete list of them.

3. There's an optional Tweetdeck-style multicolumn interface called "advanced mode". Go to Preferences > Enable Advanced Web Interface, tick box and click "Save Changes".

Someone has taken my FediFollows logo and combined it with the FediTips name to create a reddit group that is posting transphobic material.

This is nothing to do with me. I don't use reddit and never have done.

I'm part of the LGBTQIA+ community and totally condemn transphobia.

(Not going to link to the group obviously.)

Have you tried following someone and it says "pending"?

In theory this is meant to only happen when someone has manual follower approval switched on. If they have it switched on, there will be a padlock 🔒 next to their name on their profile.

However, "pending" may also happen if servers are overwhelmed and your request is in a long queue, or there is some kind of technical fault.

Don't assume someone is rejecting your follow if you see "pending". They might not even know it is happening.

Quick little tip: You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon.

All links on Mastodon count for 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters they really are.

However, you need to include https:// at the beginning of links to make them clickable.

The latest Mastodon update lets you follow hashtags. When you follow, posts with a tag appear in your timeline automatically.

Try following #Gardening to make posts about gardening appear in your timeline.

This can be REALLY useful for discovering interesting accounts.

To follow a hashtag:
1. Log in through your server's website
2. Search for hashtag
3. Click it to see its results
4. Click on 👤+ icon in top right (click again to unfollow)

Posts from followed tags are visible in the apps too.

Just to clear up some confusion about how hashtag following works on Mastodon apps:

If you follow a hashtag on Mastodon, posts from those followed tags will be visible on your home timeline on the website AND in all the apps.

So, for example, you could log in through your server's website, follow the tags you want, and then go back to using your favourite app.

If you want to follow more tags, you can currently only do that through a website or the third party Android app Fedilab.

PixelFed is an Instagram-style photo sharing platform on the Fediverse.

Livestreaming people!

Do you want people on Mastodon to be able to follow your livestream and be notified when you go live?

There's a free open source streaming platform called @owncast which is also part of the Fediverse:

You can follow OwnCast streams from Mastodon, and a post will appear in your timeline when they go live.

For example you can follow music accounts like @live or tech & gaming streamers like @Hamish or @hatnix

New people! Time to tell you more about the Fediverse :fediverse:

Mastodon is just one kind of server on a much bigger network called the Fediverse. Many of the people you follow on Mastodon aren't on Mastodon servers.

Servers on the Fediverse use a common open technical standard called ActivityPub. This means people on different kinds of ActivityPub-compatible servers can follow each other.

For example the photo account at https://pixelfed.social/Iancylkowski can be followed at @Iancylkowski

Try it!

There are no "verified" badges on here. If you see someone using a symbol like :verified: it's just a custom emoji that means absolutely nothing.

However, there are still ways you can verify your identity on here. For example we know that the European Commission's official account is @EU_Commission

p.s. If you click through and there really aren't any results, but it's an obviously popular tag which should have reults, then it might be the server is being overwhelmed by the vast number of new members 😁

If that's the case, give it a few hours so the server admin has time to fix things.

Are you finding zero results for hashtag searches on Mastodon?

Don't worry, just ignore the numbers and click on the tag you want to see your actual search results!

The numbers appear if you're logged into Mastodon through your server's website.

They say zero for most tags due to a highly misleading interface design.
