If you want to keep your follower and follow lists private, here's how to do it in Mastodon:

    1. Log in through your server's website
    2. Click on "Edit Profile"
    3. Tick the box marked "Hide Your Social Graph"
    4. Click the "Save Changes" button

You will still be able to see your follows and followers when you're logged in, but other people won't.

There are lots of ways you can use #RSS on the Fediverse:

-Follow any Mastodon account's public posts through RSS by putting .rss at the end of their profile URL. Use this address in your feed reader software.

-Follow any PeerTube account or channel by clicking the options menu next to the Subscribe button and selecting RSS.

-If you are on a Friendica server, you can use it as a feed reader. Paste an RSS feed address in the search box, that feed's posts will appear in your home timeline.

All the big social media platforms have one goal, and one goal only: to keep you there for as long as they can, so they can show ads, and make more money. On top of that, things you are subscribed to might also never be shown to you. You can't really go back to older things, search through what you archived, sort it in a specific way, create your own organization system. RSS works with 2 components: an RSS Feed Reader, and RSS Feeds. Feeds are what you'll subscribe to: they're just a simple file a lot of websites have, that can be read by the Feed Reader, which will aggregate all these feeds in one place. And RSS has TONS of advantages! First, you'll only ever get what you subscribed to. There is no algorithm, no recommendations, no ads in between posts. And you can add a LOT of sources: websites, video channels, podcasts, social media accounts, and even newsletters. Second, all feed readers have organization capabilities. Third, you can sort things. Fourth, you can go back and search through older articles. Fifth, you can navigate super easily from one article to the other. And finally, it's portable: all readers will let you export and import your feed list. RSS is all about adding sources, or feeds to your reader. A lot of websites will display a small orange square icon, which is the RSS logo. Clicking the icon will bring you to the feed, or give you a URL you can copy. That's what you want to add to your feed reader. But some websites don't have an RSS feed, or an icon to access it. No matter, most RSS feed readers will let you add any website URL, and automatically create an RSS feed for you. If you want to add videos from a youtube channel, let's say a bearded french Linux content creator, most feed readers will also just let you copy paste the channel's URL and add it as a feed. On Peertube, it's even easier, just click the subscribe button, and you get the ability to access the feed. You can even add social media posts if you really want to. Using rss.app, you can just copy paste a social media profile in there, and it will spit out an RSS feed you can add to your reader. And you can also add podcasts. If you're really into RSS, you can also add newsletters. Using the website kill-the-newsletter.com, you can generate an email address and a feed. The first thing you'll need to pick is obviously an RSS Reader. If you want a single device solution, it's very easy. On Linux, Newsflash is the one I use. A few web browsers will give you access to an RSS Feed reader built-in, like Opera or Vivaldi, and Thunderbird also has the ability to do that. If you want the simplest multi-device solution, Feedly is a good bet. You can create a free account, add up to 100 different feeds, create a few folders, and if you want to go over that, they have paid plans. They have mobile apps, and a web interface on PC. There's also Newsblur, which does the same thing, and is open source, but the free version limits you to 64 feeds.

      from Veronica Explains
The modern web can be distracting, invasive, and slow. Luckily, there's another way! Using an RSS/Atom feed reader can really help cut out distractions. Doing so from the terminal can enhance the effect, keeping you informed without all of the adtech and algorithms. Enter Newsboat! Newsboat is an open source fork of Newsbeuter, and is a wonderful terminal-based feed reader. I even fire it up on my old Wyse terminal in the video! In this video, I explain how to install and configure Newsboat on Manjaro, Fedora, and Pop!_OS. It's packaged up for other distros too, and non-Linuxes like macOS (via Brew) and FreeBSD. Shout-out to Christian from @The Digital Life for helping out my pronunciation! This video also has some footage of @Techno Tim and @Learn Linux TV , both of whom are great. If you want to help support the channel, you can join the Patreon at https://patreon.com/VeronicaExplains. For $10/mo, I'll print your name on my dot matrix printer and put it in the video. The official Mastodon app is doing something new which is potentially very dangerous to the existence of Mastodon and the Fediverse.

The official Mastodon app now prompts users to join mastodon.social by default, when previously it prompted them to pick a server. If you're new this may sound harmless, but let me explain.

The entire point of this place is to be a social network spread out on as many servers as possible (the reasons are here: https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/).

You can ask search engines such as Google not to index your account by doing this:

    1. Log in through your server's website
    2. Go to Preferences > Other > Opt Out Of Search Engine Indexing
    3. Tick the box and click "Save Changes"

(If you're on mobile you will need to click ☰ to see preferences)

Bear in mind this method relies on search engines obeying your request. If you want to be absolutely sure a post isn't indexed, use a non-public visibility.

You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon!

All links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your post limit, no matter how long the links actually are.

Link shortener services like bit.ly, t.co etc track users who click on their links. This is really bad for privacy, so Mastodon removed any practical need to use them. If you still use link shorteners on Mastodon, it will be obvious to everyone that you are just doing it for tracking purposes.

If you're going to have a verified link on your Mastodon profile, PLEASE verify through your own site if you have one. Don't rely on third party verification sites.

I'm currently trying to work out if the broadcaster NPR owns
a particular account, but I have no idea if it's real because it's verified by some random third party site. If it really was NPR, why wouldn't they just verify through their own site https://npr.org?

Third party verification causes more problems than it solves 👎

Here are instructions for how to verify your account, including the option to have a green verified link in your profile:

It can be done on your own site, and also on sites you don't own if the site allows HTML code to be inserted on your page. For example, some universities allow academics to insert verification links on their staff page.

But the third party services I'm criticising are ones with no reputation of their own, so they're sort of useless.

This also transfers bookmarks, mutes and blocks. Posts stay behind, but they will redirect to your new account.

One of the main challenges for new servers on here is discovering content to interact with.

Relays speed up the discovery process, and allow even a single user server to automatically see a large part of the Fediverse.

There's a new relay service by @astro@c3d2.social called FediBuzz Relay:

It allows servers to subscribe to custom relays based on tags or instances. (If you use this, can you let us know your experiences in the replies?)
