There goes the cloud again.

> A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug.
> Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance hit on Intel products. The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 per cent slow down.
> A spokesperson for Intel was not available for comment
Weren't they now.

Rysiekúr Memesson (rysiek@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 15-Dec-2017 00:53:08 UTC Rysiekúr Memesson @chosafine Facebook is already "free traffic" on many providers. Making Mastodon or Diaspora second-rate netizens (since Facebook will be able to pay for the "premium" access to users) is a simple business decision. Which will drive more people to Facebook and make the lock-in stronger.
But sure, nothing to worry about.

Rysiekúr Memesson (rysiek@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 05-May-2017 08:35:29 UTC Rysiekúr Memesson @celesteh @pettter @Hamiller @maiyannah @bob this transparency can have many forms: a page available only to users on a given instance; or available on a per-request basis (but there has to be an understanding that requests will be fulfilled quickly).
One of the promises of Mastodon is "if you don't like what your instance is doing, change instance". As a user, I first have to *know* what my instance is doing though.

Rysiekúr Memesson (rysiek@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 05:30:20 UTC Rysiekúr Memesson @xor I agree with all of this, but just to stir up hornets' nest a bit:
1. how about: "if you're not paying for it, there's a good chance you're the product"
2. we really have to start making #FLOSS users understand they *need* to support the software they're using financially even if there is no upfront price tag.
