@dosnostalgic I wasn't a fan at all of the color potions puzzle which was two minutes before this either, I would include that as the lowpoint too. Also, the "remember the colors at the beginning? No? then you're stuck" was a terrible design idea for 1994, almost Sierra-evil.
Yesterday I finally finished Kyrandia II The Hand of Fate and by the end, as you can see from this clip, I was slightly going out of my mind with the inverted Tower of Hanoi puzzle. Cause that's the best way to end your point and click game with.
Today KeeperFX 1.0 was released, marking the completion of the entire original Dungeon Keeper code being rewritten plus a bunch of fixes, improvements and new units. https://keeperfx.net/
Never try to play through your game in one day: words to live by. But, more specifically, how romantic is writing a postcard to Sierra to ask for a hint?
@dosnostalgic can't argue with that after many nights spent playing French games on Twitch. Then again, that same description could apply to most Italian games from the time as well...
In Extremis is an obscure 1993 FPS from France, developed by Blue Sphere (and not by Delphine as many reported). Along with stealing (they weren't licensed apparently) sounds from Alien, interestingly it featured automatic opening doors years before Quake did.
Today I'm remembering Angst: A Game of Urban Survival. An incredibly unique 1992 DOS exercise in social commentary about Los Angeles in the early 90s, the riots and recession. The attitude chosen by the player for each scenario, from Conservative to Liberal and Green, can lead to different consequences. It is indeed a sort of rough precursor to Disco Elysium.
@dosnostalgic there's also - among many omissions - the lack of any news about Duke Nukem Forever, a deliberate choice which makes the random "Bombshell" reference even stranger. I'd imagine anyone not knowledgeable about 3D Realms to be like "wait who?!".
As for me, I can say I did learn about the development Halo but mostly because I don't really cared enough to research it. Not much else.
@dosnostalgic if I had to take a shot every time I did not understand how to control or play a French game, I would have died of alcohol poisoning already ten/fifteen times
@dosnostalgic I've reviewed it. Sure, having influencers/content crators talk about games is fine. Featuring an entire minute of a random AVGN episode? Definitely less so.
@dosnostalgic I am also confused as to why entire segments of the documentary feature content creators voicing their opinion on games. I mean, fine, but that's not what a documentary is?
@dosnostalgic@richardtroupe it's just very bland corridors after corridors of repetitive stuff, even the enemies do not seem very well utilized (not the bosses for sure). It's like a solid framework for a good single player campaign, but definitely does not play like one.
Call of the Machine shows that in the hands of a team (MachineGames) that actually cares about a single player experience, Quake 2 can indeed offer a fantastic journey. Sure, it's been decades of design later and they're working on the strength of an updated engine and all that, but the design is just great, challenging in the right ways and keeps you on your toes. Basically everything that Quake II SP vanilla isn't.
