Online anonymity: study found ‘stable pseudonyms’ created a more civil environment than real user names

    > What matters, it seems, is not so much whether you are commenting anonymously, but whether you are invested in your persona and accountable for its behaviour in that particular forum.

i've said this in replies to people but never on its own, so here it is:

rethink the assumption that open, unmoderated signups should be the norm.

open signups are a tool for growth. capitalist platforms adopt open signups because they prioritize growth above all else. if you value fostering a healthy community, you *cannot* have 100% unmoderated signups. closed networks can control registrations by banning clients once. an open network cannot do this.

@aral still, both email and ap's "privacy guarantee" is the same: your messages will be private to the servers that receive them. that doesn't preclude the "rogue admin" threat model, but it doesn't make either "public" per se.

even if your measuring stick for privacy is e2ee, you're basically making the mistake of equivocating existing implementations with the spec itself. pgp exists for email, but hasn't been done yet for ap. it's like saying xmpp is public despite omemo

someone should fork #chevereto and add #activitypub support (and remove #disqus) so we can have a federated #500px-alike

@MnemonicLight @petercoffin I think people trying to pitch it as a 1:1 Twitter replacement are wrong, but only because they're equivocating without realizing it. What they mean is that Mastodon is like Old Twitter, the place where you talk to your friends and see what's up with their day.

It's radically different from New Twitter, the "news" app where you consume viral Content(tm) and current events and discourse until you're depressed.

Mastodon is more like an evolution of email.

which is the entire point, really. hosting a few thousand users, not too bad. hosting 2 billion? how do you do that without needing a ton of money?

    @Laurelai issue #177 - support account migration

a bit hard because mastodon assumes a webfinger address will always point to the same account, and that this URI will never change

If webfinger was used *only* for lookup, then maybe a.weirder.earth wouldn't have had to change to weirder.earth

it would require updating a lot of accounts in the database though

also kind of ironic that the only reason it's being so widely discussed right now is because it's trending.

without trends, a lot less people would see #forkoff

with trends, basically everyone on 2.4.1rc1 is seeing it

kind of ironic for trending hashtags to get implemented and then the top trend is about forking the project because of the addition of trending hashtags

ugh i really hope crossposters don't slowly choke mastodon like they did to diaspora*

if you're just crossposting everything you tweet on birdsite then what even is the point of making a mastodon account? that's glorified spam at worst, and a recipe for abandonment.
