@tekkie @digitalRightsNinja I mean, Wikipedia does not block Tor. If you use Tor you don't get to *edit* Wikipedia anonymously, but you *can* read it and you *can* register / log-in and edit then.

CloudFlare is exploiting and supercharging the "oooooh scaary darkweeeeb 👻" narrative for profit, and to push more people into their centralized service. They already handle ~20% of all web traffic globally.

I would argue CloudFlare centralization is a bigger threat than Tor.

This is remarkable. Looks like #KBin instances already have more active monthly users than #Lemmy instances.

It's notable because Lemmy had been around for a while, while KBin is a relative newcomer to "federated threaded news discussion" space on fedi.

It's also great, since Lemmy has certain problematic tankie legacy (although there are plenty of instances that are absolutely not supportive of that stuff).

One can follow Lemmy (and I presume Kbin, though that I have not tested myself) communities directly from any other fedi instance. For example, I am following @technology directly from my account here.

Now that Lemmy/Kbin have become pretty active, this might be a decent way of getting new fedi users to have a better on-boarding experience.

Just suggest a few active communities to them, and bam, plenty of interesting stuff gets boosted into their timeline. 🤔

@manu this is completely true. Ubuntu keeps re-inventing the wheel every 2-3 years and expecting you to learn the new wheel and its peculiarities immediately.

I just realized something about boosts here that I think is important.

On "algoritmized" social media, your "rt" or "like" will feed the algorithm, and then more people will potentially see the post in question — but that's very impersonal. It's mediated by the faceless algorithm.

On fedi, boosts are *personal*. When you see a boosted toot, you also see *who* boosted it into your timeline.

This means that the booster is more aware they are responsible for posts they boost! :blobcatthink:

Can't spell "fediverse" without "diverse", is all I'm saying.

Seriously though, fedi was *built* by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is *the reason* the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

One more thought for #TwitterMigration #NewHere folk: be patient.

There is no algorithm to suggest things, you need to curate your home timeline yourself. This takes time. Follow fast and broadly; unfollow just as fast if somebody's posts turn uncool.

Building your following here takes work, too. You are starting anew, and it's a bit daunting, but don't get discouraged — remember, here you are not one out of ~200mln, you are one of maybe 0.5mln active users.

If you post it, they will follow.
