that's people being shitty, not an inherent property of the software i could publish libre software designed to do all kinds of awful things and being libre wouldn't make it good

@lnxw48a1 granted, macOS was created back when Apple did/published actual Human Interface research and used it to drive their products

@lnxw48a1 i like some of the low-level arch of iOS (based on the papers i've read), but i def agree about the UX

macOS is really nice the only people i've worked with that have any complaints about it are gamers who think that windows is "more open" than macos

its a *NIX and the desktop is stable, pretty much stays out of your way, and doesn't get overhauled every couple of versions. any changes are applied incrementally, but they usually aren't major.

@skoll if you play it right, maybe a future version of Imaginary Company could ship fully libre hardware running RISC-V, some libre GPU, and other libre chip designs

@skoll 2 is a good starting point. purism and system76 are already making decent money selling relatively libre hardware preloaded with linux distros. that's a good first step, but it isn't enough i don't think. the perception of linux desktop UX is that its pretty mediocre which is a big show stopper for a lot of people.

@skoll you can't make money selling software, you *can* sell services, you *can* selling hardware.

@skoll i've had lots of engineers tell me that they'd jump on linux desktop if it was as comfy as macOS

@skoll well not just hardware, but all of the nice comfy software that they need to be productive without doing any extra configuration work
