I feel embarrassed and bad about my role in this latest kerfuffle. A question was asked, I responded strongly as I often do, and that got its own life.

I am disappointed in myself (because I should have been more careful with words, with the platform I have around here), but also in fedi (because we all should know to be excellent to each other).

No, nobody is trying to "sell out" fedi. Nobody is being "paid off" by some corpo. There is no need for digging trenches and laying barbed wire.

There's a lot of shit flying in the #Fediverse lately and a lot of times perspective seems to get lost. Yes, there are things we need to talk about, and yes there are things we will not agree on. And that's okay.

But leave the pitchforks and torches out of this.

Fedi admins put in the hours and effort and emotion into making fedi happen. Sometimes they make decisions we might not agree with. We should criticize, but we should not pile-on.

#UnpopularOpinion Running your own #Mastodon instance really isn’t that big a thing. If you can work with WordPress — you’re set, IMHO. Book your instance as a service, so you don’t have to care about the complicated parts. I am a happy and proud customer of @mastohost. Do it for yourself and, say, max 5 friends or family members. I guess I or @aral should write a blog entry on how we work with our small instances to show you it’s really not magic.

I think we need to move away from a strategy of boycott towards a strategy of building community power

@atomicpoet I don't see any such thing happening.

BTW, I'm meeting with Meta next week. Look forward to hearing where they are. 👍

I couldn't sit around and wait and to be honest, everyone I've been in contact with at Meta has been awesome.

I'm still looking forward to it all.

If you don't believe point 3, go reread all the hype about them and Google adopting XMPP two decades ago. You'll see that it aligns perfectly with the one about Facebook and ActivityPub. Nothing has changed since. Meta ha nothing to gain from joining the Fediverse. They're a juggernaut set on monopolizing the web and wiping out the competition. They'll use the federation to kill off Twitter and BlueSky, and then to siphon out the Fediverse itself from the general consciousness.

This is a preemptive call to #Fediblock Meta's #P92/#Barcelona instance, for three reasons at least:
1. it'll be huge and extremely poorly moderated;
2. it will be a #privacy nightmare, allowing Meta to extensively profile #Fediverse users with greater ease;
3. it will be used to #EEE the Fediverse in the same way their “support” for #RSS and #XMPP was used to wipe them out from the general consciousness with a rug-pull (my full thoughts on this: http://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/credible-threat-1/ )

ℹ️ As you probably have heard, Meta (#Facebook, #Instagram, #WhatsApp) wants to join the :fediverse: #fediverse with a new project code named #Project92 and possibly named #Threads (https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754304/instagram-meta-twitter-competitor-threads-activitypub).

There are a lot of worries that it will overtake and pollute the fediverse (incl. Mastodon). There is even a lobby started that wants to coordinate to block Meta en masse. Others say that it's a great opportunity for Mastodon and the fediverse to have more users, content and publicity.

What about todon.eu and todon.nl I hear you ask. I like to poll the todon.* community about what to do with Meta when we have more facts, so when we can make an informed decision.
