@hergertme I am mentoring one student for @teem project in GSoC. I will not be as busy as you, but it will be my first experience mentoring and I guess it will be a lot of work.
Good luck with your project! -

Love or hate it, Hubzilla's model is probably the only workable one presented that actually offers privacy. -

@colegota @hannes2peer @espectalll I don't think people went back to Twitter because of the "extreme leftishness" of Quitter. They went back because they wanted a larger community with more people sharing their interests (even if those are "mujeres y hombres y viceversa") and did not care too much about free software. Here we are relatively few, and the topics are clearly biased, I am afraid.
On the other hand... any bad thing that Intereconomía says about Quitter is good publicity, can we agree on this last thing? XD -

"Don't search my public posts" is a very strange thing to toss a fit about. Perhaps one should re-evaluate what they actually want, because it sure isn't an open federated system. -

@maiyannah I think many people might actually not want a federated twitter-like social network at least, and would prefer one where people can set up smaller opt-in communities, as opposed to broadly public conversations.
But I think peoples' preferences are pretty broad-ranging, and many people are also exploring the consequences.

Someone needs to explain to the Mastodonites what microblogging is about, I don't think they got the memo. First, Gargron tries to implement private messaging, now Mastodonites argue against indexing/archiving.
Here's the thing: if you don't want something to be read by anyone, DON'T MICROBLOG IT. Especially on a protocol that federates with strangers! -

Mastodon privacy isn't very different to what we colloquially call Public but not public, and in fact, we - and by we I mean every project with Zot - handle it in pretty much the same way as they do. They give you warnings in big letters that you're being stupid, we put it on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard". In both cases, you're just saying "if you think this is a privacy setting, you're an idiot".
But remember back in the old days when everyone with any form of Zot was mostly technically competent...lots of us used it. It stopped being used as better privacy controls were enabled (or more accurately, as early bugs were fixed - but the point is, as these features became ready for the prime time).
So, maybe Mastodon isn't being as brave/stupid as they appear to be.
Maybe we're seeing the birth of pstatus. -

@beardyunixer, @paranoix and I were recently seeing how misleading the "privacy" settings of Mastodon are. He is a #Mastodon admin and really "techie", still he had to try all settings and be amazed that all his statuses were shared in the public timeline of the GNUSocial instance I (one of his followers) use.
I would support a pStatus protocol, but I feel that lying to your users about their privacy settings is not the way to go
