"In recent years, new scientific research has demonstrated the “massive cognitive load” on those who are financially insecure. Living in poverty is akin to losing 13 IQ points."

I have friends, peers, and readers on bird site who are like “please come back!”
Fine, I check in again. And it’s still nothing but a waking nightmare of people yelling about politics and daily horrors.
I’m not trying to avoid or deny current events or the awful problems and legacy of my country. I’m trying to get active and do my part.
But I also can’t eat, sleep, and breathe this stuff every second of the day. It’s debilitating.

@sean This is why I don't like non-standardized federation or its extensions (I mean that I dislike those which are not under #W3C, #ISO or #IETF or some standards foundation). The moment I saw myself managing two accounts for the same purpose, and one standardized and federated, I got out.

@wakest @sean yeah, I do feel strongly about this, mainly because federated social networks are at a disadvantage due to the Network Effect; splitting the field further makes this problem exponentially worse.
So, D* refusing to implement *any* other protocol (they've been asked to implement a number of protocols and refused each and every time) is actively undermining the broader federated social networking.
And the reason? Because Diaspora devs treat this as a protocol measuring contest.

@sean it's really depressing but hardly surprising. Diaspora devs have acted like that for as long as I can remember.
They got to be the biggest federated social network a while back and started being dicks about it. This, sadly, continues.
One of the reasons I don't log in to my Diaspora account anymore.

The stance by some of the #Diaspora core devs over #ActivityPub is quite honestly disappointing, and kind of perpetuates everything that depresses me over that project.
https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora/issues/7422
There are many valid criticisms to be had, but Diaspora in general has done fuck-all to support federation with other platforms, forcing those systems to conform to its own protocol instead.
The do-nothing attitude of their devs is particularly infuriating because their pushback arguments fall flat when compared against other projects. Friendica put the effort in, as did Hubzilla and Osada. None of them have "perfect" implementations by any means, but people within those projects have nevertheless made some kind of effort. -

Dear Tor user, we need to make sure you are a human. To keep our customers websites secure, we didn't find a better solution than blocking you by getting you stuck in an endless loop of unsolvable captchas. Oh, and of course, we don't give a shit about your need for privacy and anonymity.

Protip:
When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,
"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes
I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

This is true, yet the cooperative form is still far, far better than any other form of economic organisation as it has democratic values baked in by default. Also, cooperatives are a good way to exploit the capitalist obsession about private property and entrepreneurship in our favor: by posing as "businesses" FOSS projects would be harder to attack as dismantling them would appear as an attack on people doing business, a taboo under capitalism

@signaleleven @turion i don't know if this is #FreeSoftware, (currently missing in https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Category/Hobbies/home-automation). Telling reviewers on https://directory.fsf.org/ (by adding the entry yourself or participating in the meeting described in that page) can tell this later. All we can assume now is that it's not free/libre. The #Dieselgate scandal, the works of Eben Moglen, Richard Stallman and many others lead to the fact that #OpenSource isn't enough or misses the point.

@lain do the DMs between #Mastodon and #Pleroma conform to the AP spec? What I mean is, If AppX implemented the AP spec in full, would users on an instance of AppX be able to send DMs to users on Mastodon and Pleroma instances and vice-versa?
