At this point the people funding the main branch of Mastodon seem to mostly be buying us growth-hack and popularity-reinforcing mechanisms that appeal to the impulses that have ruined every commercial social network.

Even most prison sentences end, eventually (setting aside due process adjudication before sentences are imposed). Are we supposed to passively accept "harassment justice" that continues until the target dies?

We have pretty effective tools for excluding people that we don't like, or consider threatening, or unwelcome. Use them.

But pressuring others to ostracise people, and then attacking them if they don't, crosses a line for me. I don't care how right you are or how just your cause. It's still abusive.

I didn't say anything when it was Wil Wheaton because there seemed to be, though not consensus, broad agreement even among people that are strong voices against harassment that Fuck That Guy.

If you participate in such activity, or condone it on your instance, I will likely view it as a violation of my instance's code of conduct and act accordingly.

I'm alarmed because it seems mob justice is causing more and more vulnerable people in the fediverse to shrink back to avoid becoming the next target, including, apparently, admins who I like and respect, and don't blame for being wary.

They're pulling some tired harmful shit, starting with targeting the same victims because it's easy and the already have the recipe, and it's working.

Someone(s) seems to be going down a pre-made list of people to individually target, except the list is made by channers and edgelords and the justifications are unreliable.

Someone who still talks to them should let them know that their role as self-appointed "justified" targeted harassment mob is not recognized. ...if you want to risk being their next target, I guess.

Anyone who uses the phrase "social experiment" to describe their actions, but is subject to no institutional review board or independent ethical constraints, is presumptively doing something antisocial and seeks to thwart criticism with a pseudoscientific slogan.
