I know there are still a lot of feelings about the messiness over the weekend, but I kind of enjoyed it because it stripped away the pretense and showed who a lot of people are.

That is both good and bad, but I think some really good ideas and initiatives have come out of it.

Community is going to be an ever changing thing, especially when it's global. And it's not always going to be pretty.

But that's the process. We all gotta get a bit smarter, a bit tougher, a bit more open.

I'd like to remind you that Mastodon's governance has been a subject of debate for a long time. This is not a new issue — people have been presenting their suggestions for months. The kind of drama happening now (ie. devs ignoring specific requests put forth by some users) is the natural outcome of the benevolent dictatorship model and proves that, no matter how decent, good and caring a person is when starting a massive FOSS project, they are ALL bound to reach the "I make the rules" stage, because that's the nature of human beings when exposed to massive stress.

Let's stop #ForkOff and make #Mastodon a #Cooperative NOW!

The drama around #ForkOff only reinforces my theory that the only healthy way to handle FOSS projects is via multi-stakeholder cooperatives where both devs and users have their say. The amount of bitterness I'm seeing right now is the most eminent byproduct of the "benevolent dictatorship" model which has been the scourge of the open source world since the beginning of times.

I think this calls for a mutualist coop as a mutualist coop would include the community not just the developers as the project governance.

Ultimately every FOSS project like this that I've run into is (or becomes) selfish in this way.

This is hard to describe. It's like... in FOSS we are meant to all have equal power. But devs sometimes think that means we should all have equal skill, and if they can fork the project so can I. And if I can't, it's just because I haven't learnt how to code then that's just a formality and a matter of time and work, and I can go and do that.

There is no way I could ever fork the project myself! I ask for changes sometimes because I want something that works for me and people like me. But I've been told to #ForkOff so many times - it's the standard response when you're a user and you ask for something that the dev doesn't really get.

When most of the devs are straight white cis men and you don't code, if your experiences are met with #ForkOff, a website that is made only for people NOT like you is inevitable.

I have to block SO MANY White Man Avatars on here, so many more than I have to block TERFs on Twitter as a person who shouts about being trans and having trans experiences, even!

Here's a chunk of my regex filters on the federated timeline. I had to do this because otherwise my federated timeline was unreadable as a non-coder, no matter which instance I was on.

Unpopular opinion:

I don't think we should make free and federated replacements for *every* proprietary social media site, just because we can. It's not a no-brainer.

Yes, we would get rid of corporate surveillance, but a free and federated version of site X can still be highly addictive and distracting, plus enabling all sorts of abuse if not designed properly.

I don't want to curb your enthusiasm, but please give this some more thought before jumping on the bandwagon.
