I tried to ask about this before posting, as that github page did seem to indicate it was open source.

But as they didn't release the server code, that's quite a large problem?

The save-an-article service Pocket is useful, but it's also proprietary and tracks you.

There's a privacy-friendly free open alternative called #Wallabag you can use instead.

They have an official instance where you can sign up, suitable for non-technical users:

    https://www.wallabag.it/en

There's also a project website which tells tech users how to self-host their own instance:

    https://www.wallabag.org/en

Wish we knew why Mozilla never open sourced it, they've had two years to do so :blobthinking:

I hope so, but Mozilla bought it over two years ago and still haven't open sourced it :(

It is very strange behaviour indeed.

I'm not sure, but Wikipedia seems to think they are part of Mozilla?

Just seems weird to see an open software company keeping it proprietary...

I have definitely recommended them to people asking about Pocket (by the way you can follow them at @wallabag ! )

If I can ask for some advice, what is the status of Pocket anyway? It seems to have some kind of source here (https://github.com/Pocket), but I'm guessing it's incomplete?

Is it just proprietary software right now, even though it's owned by Mozilla?

And OpenRouteService is good too if you want to do routing rather than general searches.

Very interesting to hear that Qwant Maps is open source, would be nice to see instances of this run by individuals and indie orgs/companies.

Maybe such instances could be integrated into the Fediverse somehow?

Anyone have any links to social FOSS software engineering sites? i.e., application suggestions, requirements, design suggestions, ...

This idea popped into my head when reading about uses of mapping data. Who better to define FOSS requirements than users?

Anyone heard of this? @switchingsocial @lunduke

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Qwant Maps seems to be trying to make OSM more user friendly, a bit closer to Google Maps' features?

I'm not hugely happy about Qwant's ties to Bild, but people need user friendly alternatives to Google Maps.
